Bob was predeceased by his sister Jean (2021), and is survived by his loving wife Fay, his children Lindsey (Lorrae) and Rob (Mary), and grandchildren Max (Abby), Madison, Jordan and Luke.
Bob was born in Kamloops but spent his pre-school years living on his grandfather’s large cattle and sheep ranch near Savannah. Moving into Kamloops for school, Bob played minor hockey and fostered a lifelong love of the Brooklyn Dodges (now LA); he was annoyed to the end that his Mom accidently threw his extensive baseball card collection! Bob worked odd jobs, such as delivering the newspaper and shining shoes at the local poolhall. Bob spent too much time in the poolhall, hanging out with troublemakers such as Whitey, PeeWee, John, Mervin, Dennis and Terry (who had the car). He met “Patricia Fay” in June 1957; after many double dates with friends with cars, Bob realized he needed a job. Thankfully he joined BC Highways in 1958 and so Bob and Fay married in 1960. They bought their first car in 1961 (a 51 Chevy).
Bob’s 38-year career took his family to Bralorne, Lillooet, Kamloops, Birch Island, Avola, back to Kamloops, Clearwater, back to Kamloops, 100 Mile House, Hope, back to Kamloops, Revelstoke, MacKenzie, Fort St. James, Merritt and, finally, Qualicum Beach. Eventually promoted to Project Supervisor, Bob was responsible for building large sections of many of BC’s most traveled major highways, enjoyed by thousands every day. Bob and Fay created a loving home everywhere they landed, collecting many wonderful friends along the way.
Bob loved sports! He loved to watch baseball, in person and on TV. He was passionate supporter of the Kamloops Blazers.
For 65 years Fay was his best friend and traveling co-pilot. Bob and Fay loved to travel, including annual family vacations, driving trips across Canada and the United States, a Caribbean cruise, tour of Australia, vacations in the Bahamas and several to Hawaii, and in retirement, winters in Phoenix and Palm Desert (his favourite).
His greatest love was for his family. Family first. Family summer vacations, trips to Disneyland in California and Florida, and to Las Vegas (where we saw Elvis Presley in concert!). For many years, Dad would be home early to watch over his two rug rats. He taught his boys the most important lessons in life: work hard, make the best out of any situation, honesty is always the best policy, always call your Mother.
In retirement, Bob and Fay loved live theatre and seeing all the latest movies. He was faithfully trying to get through Gunsmoke’s 635 episodes. In the final difficult years Fay cared for Bob at home until in the final week he moved to a hospice. He hated that she had to care for him but he didn’t want to be away from her.
The family would like to thank Dr. JMB Wagenaar, who cared for Bob for 31 years, and his wonderful office team, as well as the awesome North Island homecare nursing team. The family is very grateful to the team at the Trillium Hospice in Parksville, especially Olivia. (Fay asks everyone to donate to their local hospice as a tribute to Bob.)
There will be a Celebration of Life for Bob Galloway in Kamloops on Saturday, September 24 at 1:30 p.m. at the Desert Gardens Community Centre. Please post your special messages on Bob’s Tribute Wall at www.yatesmemorial.ca/listings.
