How do you say goodbye to your son? We all loved Sean so very much. Words can’t describe the pain we al feel because of the unspeakable tragedy that took his life. Sean was taken from us far too soon and in the worst way possible. These are the most devastating words we have ever had to write.
Sean was a kind, loving, caring and thoughtful man. He was always there to lend a helping hand to friends and family. Sean gained the trust and respect of his employer of 6 years through his honesty and hard work, performing care-taking duties and maintaining his employer’s home and yacht in his absence.
Sean accompanied his dad on many wilderness trips of fishing, hunting, and river boating when we lived up north in Mackenzie. Sean was not just a good son, but a good companion on these excursions. Often, when most everyone had already gone to bed, Sean could be heard casting his line for one more chance at catching the “big one”.
When we moved back to Vancouver island in the early 1990s, Sean helped us build our home in Goldstream Park, outside of Victoria. There are lots of fond memories of catching crab in the Finlayson Arm Inlet behind our home, and then sitting down to a feast on the deck.
Sean was always very curious. When he was about he age of 7, we took a family trip to Barkerville, the mining town in Northern BC. We had told Sean that during the gold rush the roads were paved in gold. Sean being very literal spent the day with his little gold pan in search of lost treasure in the dirt roads of Barkerville.
Sean had a great sense of humour and an infectious laugh. Even when you didn’t know what he was laughing about, just hearing him laugh made you laugh with him. Funny movies were funnier when watching them with Sean. Sean always tried to see the lighter side of things, and often could be seen as a bit of a prankster, doing things to make people laugh.
In 2018 Sean went to Disneyland with his sister Sheila and her husband Gordon… talk about a road trip! Being Sean’s first time to Southern California, they showed him all the highlights of Anaheim: Disneyland, Universal Studios and Medieval Times. Then on to San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge and touring Alcatraz, which was probably the highlight of the trip for Sean. The photos they took show how much Sean enjoyed himself and they are an everlasting memory.
Growing up in Mackenzie, Sean was an avid skier. When we moved to the Island, Sean liked to hike and swim. He loves his long summer days at Nanaimo Lakes with his friends. On weekends Sean loved going to garage sales and hanging out with his parents. Sean enjoyed cooking and sharing of meals with family. He did two years in the culinary arts program at Camosun College.
Sean was a beautiful son, brother, uncle, brother-in-law, and friend. His loss leaves us shattered. We urge you to hug your loved ones and let them know how much you care. There is a saying “You cannot step in the same river twice; cherish the now, yesterday is gone, and tomorrow is only a promise”.
What we shared will never die, it lives in our hearts and memories. Till we meet again our darling son. Love always Mom, Dad, his sister Sheila, her husband Gordon, and his niece and nephew Keith and Kirsten, and all extended family and friends.
