Bernice Elizabeth Sitzman, 93, of LaPorte, Texas passed away on January 1st 2021 in Covington, Louisiana. She was born on October 19th 1927 in Holdingford, Minnesota to Eva Marie Greener and Michael Greener.

She is survived by her children, John R. Sitzman and his wife, Linda, of Covington, Louisiana, Michael D. Sitzman and his wife, Barbara, of LaPorte, Texas, and Joseph J. Sitzman and his wife, Therese, of Midland, Texas; grandchildren Karen Case and husband Chris, Lauren Sitzman, Michael A. Sitzman and wife Lisa, Amy Cobb and husband Taylor, Megan Sitzman, and Emma Sitzman; her sister Beatrice Douvier of Melrose, Minnesota; and five great-children Ashley Inabinet, Madden Sitzman, William Cobb, Sloane Sitzman, and Madison Cobb. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John W. Sitzman, her great-grandson Phillip J. Inabinet, four brothers and five sisters.

Bernice grew up on a farm in a large family during the Depression and was a long time resident of Minnesota and Texas. She moved from St. Cloud, Minnesota to Beaumont, Texas in 1960 with her family. She was very active in her church and children’s school (Our Lady of the Assumption) and is still remembered by many Assumption School alumni for her hard work in the school cafeteria and her loving personality. After her children grew up, she moved with her husband to the Houston area and lived in both Pasadena and LaPorte. She had recently moved to a senior living community in Covington, Louisiana. She was an accomplished seamstress for most of her life until poor eyesight prevented her from pursuing her favorite hobby. She loved gardening and was a long time volunteer at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Beaumont and at Bayshore Hospital in Pasadena. She was also active in St. Hyacinth’s Church in Deer Park and participated in the Perpetual Chapel attendance for many years. Always wanting to keep busy, she became a greeter at Walmart when she was well into her seventies and finally retired with 15 years of service at the age of 89.

Bernice was loved by all who knew her and will be missed beyond measure.

Granny as I knew her was the sweetest lady. As a good friend to her grandson Michael A Sitzman I spent many a days at the house with Granny making us pancakes and treats! She would drive us to places we needed to go as teens. Always quick with humor and just genuinely a lovely person. Later I would see her at Walmart weekly and always loved stopping to chat with her. She always wanted to see my boys and how they were growing, and treated myself, my wife and my boys like we were family. They don’t make them like Granny anymore. I know she is resting comfortably in Heaven now. My sincerest condolences to the entire Sitzman family.
