We gather today with hearts both heavy and grateful as we celebrate the remarkable life and legacy of Rev. Donny Granberry, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, pastor, and friend. Donny was born on November 28, 1960, in Crockett, Texas, and peacefully went to be with the Lord on June 22, 2025, in Houston, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Rev. Roy & Lena Granberry and James & Mildred Hudson; his grandparents in love, Joseph & Mary Hernandez; his father in love, Jerry Crenshaw; and several cherished aunts and uncles.
Donny is survived by his loving wife of nearly 44 years, Marlys Granberry; sons Kirk David Granberry (Kauleen) and Brandon Scott Roy Granberry (Samantha); daughter Lindsey Le’Nae Granberry; and his treasured grandchildren: Mason, Keegan, Hudson, Koa, Morgan, Presley, Avary, and Reece.
He also leaves behind his parents, Rev. Joe Paul & Carolyn Granberry; his brother, Randy Granberry; his twin brother, Rev. Ronny Granberry (Tammy); his mother in love, Eunice Crenshaw; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends who became family.
Donny graduated from Galena Park High School in 1979 and later earned his degree from Global University in 1999. His love story with Marlys began in the summer of 1979 when he invited her to a revival at Greens Bayou Assembly of God. It was during that revival, under the ministry of Rev. Don Brankel, that Donny surrendered his life to the Lord—a moment that would define his path for the rest of his life.
Donny and Marlys were married on July 25, 1981, at Greens Bayou Assembly of God Church and were looking forward to celebrating their 44th wedding anniversary next month.
For over 31 years, Donny was a faithful member of Greens Bayou Assembly of God, serving alongside his father, Pastor JP Granberry. He carried forward a sacred legacy, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather as a devoted minister within the Assemblies of God.
A gifted musician from an early age, Donny began playing the guitar in church at just 9 years old. His heart for worship found expression through multiple instruments, but the bass guitar was his favorite—an instrument he played with both joy and anointing. He also played with several gospel groups, including Teddy Huffam and The Gems.
In 1994, Donny answered the call to ministry. He began as an evangelist and later served as Associate Pastor under his father’s leadership. He then pastored at Vidor Assembly of God, later leading Central Assembly of God in Pasadena, Texas, where he oversaw the construction of a new church and fellowship hall. He also planted and pastored The Rock Church in Dickinson, Texas. He served on the board of Pleasant Hills Children’s Home for 10 years, and was an active leader in the South Texas District of the Assemblies of God with a passion for FireBibles and global outreach.
Beyond the pulpit, Donny served his community faithfully. He was a Chaplain for the Pasadena Police Department for 12 years.
Since 2017, Donny has been a beloved member of Grace Community Church, where he continued his passion for worship and missions.
A man of many skills, Donny worked as a carpenter, pipefitter, boilermaker, roofing contractor, and spent over 15 years as a process operator for Goodyear. But above all, he was a servant—of God, his family, and his community.
He found joy in the outdoors—cooking, hunting, fishing, playing 42, and shooting skeet. Yet, nothing brought him greater fulfillment than ministering God’s Word and shepherding his family. Donny was the spiritual rock of his home, a man whose love for his wife, children, and grandchildren was fierce and unwavering.
His deepest desire—one he shared often—was that his family circle would never be broken, and that one day, we would all be reunited in Heaven. He loved, he served, and he lived with purpose.
Rev. Donny Granberry ran his race with honor. His legacy will live on in every life he touched, every sermon he preached, every soul he led to Christ, and every heart that carries his memory forward.
“Well done, good and faithful servant… enter into the joy of your Lord.” —Matthew 25:23
