Hilda Ester Roman Castro, loving Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma, and Great Great Grandma died at her home in Pasadena on Monday, November 18, 2019, surrounded by family. Born on March 9th, 1922, Hilda was 97 years old. She was born in Canal Sone Panama, to Carmelo Dominguez Roman and Esperanza Loyzaga. Hilda spent most of her youth in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. She met her husband, Frank Domingo Castro, as a soldier who was stationed In Puerto Rico, and they were married on October 21, 1944. They celebrated 51 years of marriage before he passed away in 2005. As a young woman growing up in Puerto Rico, Hilda was excited about the opportunities of marriage to a soldier and living in the United States. After the couple married, and moved to Moulton, Texas, life was harsh on a Texas ranch. In 1966, the family home was complete and the couple and their children moved to Pasadena, Texas, where she spent the rest of her years.

Hilda loved to play BINGO. She loved traveling to Laughlin, Nevada casinos, where she played dollar slots. She could easily be convinced to play a round of 31 at the family table. Hilda was keen on word search books, and spent many of her later years, finishing book after book. Hilda never learned to drive. Hilda loved gardenias. Hilda was a lifetime member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the VFW, American Legion, and the Women’s Auxiliary of The Fraternal Order of Eagles.

The couple had nine children; seven daughters and two sons, and a grandson that they raised as their own. She is survived by daughters Mercedes (Millie) Lehde, Anna Mae Schrum, Hilda Griffin, Dorothy Jarvis, Eunice Wedman, and Frances Straub, and sons Frank Domingo Castro, Jr., Gabriel Castro, and Robert Castro. She had 16 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 1 great great granddaughter.

Visitation is on Sunday, November 24, 2019 at Pasadena Funeral Chapel from 5pm—7pm, with a Rosary starting at 7pm. Funeral services are Monday, November 25, 2019, at 10am at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Moulton, Texas. Internment is immediately following at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Rev. Gabriel Maison officiating.
