Lisa C. Gomer, age 63, passed away at her home in La Porte, Texas surrounded by her family and loved ones after a long battle with cancer. Born on March 28, 1955 in San Angelo to Joe Gomer and Vivian (Lewis) Gomer. The Gomers, including mom’s older sister, Jo Davis, moved to their lifelong home in La Porte, Texas in 1956. Lisa truly loved her home here in La Porte, creating lifelong friendships, attending St. John’s Episcopal church, and working at her father’s pharmacy.
Lisa loved to care for people and nurture everyone around her. She treasured her role as a mother, as an aunt, and as a grandmother more than anything else in the world. As a truly inspired cook, Lisa could eyeball a recipe and experiment to create something truly special and outstanding – from award winning gumbo to out-of-this-world chicken and dumplings. Her capacity for love was without limit and unconditional.
Lisa had a vibrant personality with a cutting wit and an ability to make everyone laugh around her. She also was fiercely independent and vocal, unafraid to tell the truth even if it wasn’t something you wanted to hear. She loved to travel and explore, often preferring to cover countless states by train before ever stepping foot on an airplane.
She is survived by her devoted children: David A Deatherage, Jay B. Deatherage, and Laney Deatherage. Adored Aunt Nana to Kristen Davis and Grandmother Nina to Wyatt Barnett and Jayson Deatherage. Dear sister of Jo (Gomer) Davis, who together were known far and wide as The Gomer Girls. She is also survived by her father Joe Gomer. Pre-deceased by her mom Vivian Gomer, L.H. Gomer (Papaw), Stella Gomer (Mamaw), Don Lewis, her attentive uncle, and Ruby and Hubert Driscal, beloved grandparents.
The family will hold a private ceremony at St. John’s Episcopal church and will be buried at the Forest Park East Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to a charity of your choice.
We are so grateful to the MD Anderson Cancer Center and Harbor Hospice for all the care and love they poured into our beloved mom, aunt, and daughter during her sickness.
