Beloved family man Rafael Chapa passed away on February 22, 2021 after a short illness. Born on September 20, 1947, he was a lifelong resident of Houston. He was preceded in death by his father, Abraham Chapa; sister, Beatrice Hernandez; and brother Abraham Chapa, Jr. He is lovingly remembered by his mother, Lucy Garcia Martinez, whom he respected and adored; his brother Frank and wife Olivia Chapa; sister Oralia Anderson; brother Mark and his wife Christine Chapa; daughter Lucy and husband Ramon Arevalo; step-daughter Melissa Olivarez; and a granddaughter and three grandsons.
Aside from his family, Rafael’s greatest devotion was to the military and his country. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he served in Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Regiment, 1st Marine Division and received awards for his service, including the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with 1 Star, the Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, the Combat Action Ribbon, and the Rifle Marksman Badge.
After his military service, Rafael returned home to Houston, where he worked as a part-time security officer, until his retirement. A hard worker who provided for his family, he also spent time working as a bail bondsman. His daughter Lucy recalls accompanying her father, in hopes of going inside the jail. She just wanted to see it.
The majority of his time, however, was devoted to his pride and joy, his grandchildren. He epitomized what it means to be a wonderful grandfather, who loved granddaughter Brianna and grandsons Isaiah, Nathaniel, and Leo immensely, and ensured each one always felt special in his presence.
Every celebration was a grand event, from birthday breakfasts at IHOP to always sharing his famous potato salad at family parties. He often enlisted the grandkids’ help in making his signature dish. Rafael was also well-known for his sweet tooth. He absolutely LOVED sweets and made sure to bring some to every family gathering. He was always present and hands-on, taking photos, especially Polaroids, to capture the family’s memories.
He enjoyed Newstalk radio and always kept up with politics. A patriot, he was also a Lifetime member of the American Legion – Harrisburg Post 472. He proudly shared his love of country with his grandkids and family. Rafael loved socializing and had many lifelong friends. An easygoing personality, he enjoyed telling funny jokes and witty stories. People were drawn to his relaxed demeanor and friendly nature.
Rafael will be greatly missed by family and friends. His love of life, family, and country will forever be cherished, as we fondly remember a life well-lived.
