Dr. Robert F. Haden, also known as Red, was born on September 30, 1931, to Dr. and Mrs. Earl and Virginia Haden in Richmond, Virginia. He passed away peacefully in his home on October 11, 2018, at age 87. He grew up in Arvonia, Virginia later graduating from Virginia Military Institute (VMI) in 1953, with a degree in Biology. After always aspiring to be a doctor like his father before him he went on to medical school, graduating from Medical College of Virginia in 1957. He served in the Army Medical Corp for 8 years practicing as a doctor in M.A.S.H hospitals, retiring as a Major in 1965. He practiced internal medicine in Pasadena, Texas for over 50 years. Dr. Haden served as Chief of Staff several times at Southmore Hospital. He was well-loved by his patients, staff and colleagues; friends and family enjoyed his sense of humor, wit, and passion for medicine, that he exhibited throughout his life. He loved all animals, especially dogs always having at least one by his side. Red’s favorite hobbies were fishing, golf, and enjoying the outdoors. The pastime he enjoyed most was taking family and friends fishing, followed by a fish fry.
Dr. Haden is predeceased by his father, mother, and daughter, Laura Haden Hughes. He is survived by his brother Earl Haden Jr., daughters Elizabeth Haden, Katherine Haden Driscoll (Harry), Tammy Haden Randle (Mike); and his grandchildren Haden Randle, Lauren Palek, Molly Prach, Everett Randle, Nathan Driscoll, and Katelyn Driscoll.

Dr. Haden was my father’s colleague, his physician, and most importantly, his long-time personal friend. During dad’s final years, Dr. Haden provided him exceptional care well beyond our expectations. He was there for our entire family to guide us through dad’s final journey with practical advice, wisdom, kindness, and compassion. My heart goes out to his family over this profound loss not only to them, but to his patients and the entire community. Rest in peace, Red.

I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Haden at Southmore Hospital and then again at Patient’s Medical Center. I was also one of his patients. What a great man and a great doctor he was! Not too many years ago, I asked him when he was going to retire and his answer was, “Probably never. It is nice to have a job to on vacation from.” Obviously, he loved his job. He was so loved and respected. Since he closed his practice, I have bounced to a few doctors. I guess I make the mistake of comparing all of them to Dr. Haden. No comparison out there for his knowledge, compassion, bedside manner and overall common sense approach. Love and prayers for the family and all who will miss him.
