ROY E. HANEY passed away peacefully on November 29, 2025 in Pearland, Texas. He was born on July 10, 1941 in Douglass, Texas. His parents were Walter Lamerl Haney and Bessie Ula Bradshaw Haney, both born in the Douglass and Nacogdoches area of East Texas. He graduated from Texas City High School in Texas City, Texas in 1959. He earned a B.A. in Business from the University of Texas at Austin in 1964.
Roy was a devoted husband and grateful every day for his 53 year marriage to Catherine Elizabeth Dove Haney, who preceded him in death in 2014. They famously met at UT in Austin, and they soon knew they were meant for one another. Roy and Cathy demonstrated a devoted love, and even after her passing he thought of her on a daily basis. We can only imagine the tenderness of their reunion in Heaven.
Together, Roy and Cathy built a loving family, full of tenderness, optimism, adventures, inside family jokes, and love. He loved his children and grandchildren very much, and he helped them in so many ways. Roy and Cathy encouraged their children and family to be optimistic, to enjoy learning, to have new experiences, and to step confidently into the world, all the while maintaining a supporting and loving home base to retreat to when needed. Both he and Cathy really enjoyed being grandparents – he played silly games with them and loved them so much! He also loved and appreciated all of his extended family members. Roy was fiercely loyal to his friends as well as family and grateful for many longtime friendships over the years.
After a successful early career in sales, Roy became an entrepreneur in the early 1970’s, starting first by rehabilitating abandoned houses on the condemned list and preparing them for sale or rent. He later built a small apartment complex, developed a successful remodeling business, created a thriving residential and commercial insulation business, and later took over maintenance for dozens of military recruitment offices across Texas. Always ethical and hard working, Roy exemplified the entrepreneurial spirit in all his business ventures.
Roy was active in so many areas of civic and social life. A devoted Rotarian, he served as President of two separate Rotary Clubs during his long years of service – one in Pasadena, Texas and another in Cedar Park-Leander, Texas. He was a longtime presence and executive at the Pasadena Strawberry Festival, helping it grow significantly during the 1980s and into the 2000s. He was a key leader of the Mount Vernon Civic Club during the 1970s and 1980s, serving as President on several occasions.
A lifelong classic car enthusiast, Roy began buying and rehabilitating Model A Fords in high school, exhibiting a love affair with automobiles he has handed down for two generations. He had a radiator grille for a 1932 Ford mounted on his wall of his home as a symbol of his love of cars.
Roy was proudest of his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his two children: Roy Michael “Mike” Haney (Jayna) of Pearland, Texas; and Leigh Ann Haney Choate (Dayne) of Cedar Park, Texas. He is also survived by grandchildren Ryan Michael Haney (Chelsea), Erin Patricia Broderick Haney Fant (Jeremy), Jessica Claire Oakley Sosa (Jonathan), Sarah Holland Oakley, Catherine Dove Choate and Dave Trevino.
He was delighted to meet his beautiful great-granddaughter Emery “Emmy” Ann Haney, daughter of Ryan and Chelsea Haney, before he passed. He is predeceased by his wife Catherine, precious infant grandson, Dash William Choate, his parents, and his brother Donnie L. “Don” Haney.
The family wishes to thank all those who helped him make his final years comfortable, including the Landing at Watercrest Shadow Creek Ranch, Tuscany Village Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation, Village Home Health & Hospice, and the medical team at the UT Physicians Center for Healthy Aging.
A celebration of life for Roy will be held at the Pasadena Funeral Chapel (2203 Pasadena Blvd., Pasadena, Texas 77502) on January 10, 2026 beginning at 1:00 pm, with a reception immediately following.
