Elizabeth was born and raised in Galesburg, Illinois. She went to Knox College in Galesburg, in a time when women didn’t go to college (1944-48) where she received her B. A. degree. It was there in Galesburg where she met and married Donald Van Steenwyk, after which they moved to California and raised four children while developing several businesses.
Elizabeth pursued a career in writing, becoming an award winning author of over 75 published children’s books. In the early 1970’s, Don and Elizabeth invested in acreage on the west side of Paso Robles, from which Adelaida Vineyards and Winery developed. Elizabeth was the CEO and owner of Adelaida Vineyards for over 35 years.
Elizabeth is survived by her children Dr. Kedrin Van Steenwyk (Dr. Liam Duggan) of Kiawah Island, SC, and their children Meghan, Liam, Alison, Kieran and Kevin; Matthew Van Steenwyk (Dr. Betty Van Steenwyk) of Las Vegas, NV, and their children, Elizabeth, Todd, and Gretchen; Dr. Brett Van Steenwyk (Debbie) of Bellingham, WA, and his children Donald, Charles, and Emma; Dr. Gretchen Marsh (Dr. Jon Marsh) of Reno, NV, and their sons Michael, Aaron, Don Kerry, Andrew and Matthew.; and Colonel Robert O. Gray (Catherine) of Dayton, OH and their sons Daniel and Andrew.
A celebration of Elizabeth's life will be held at 2:30 pm on Saturday, July 31, 2021, at the First Baptist Church of Paso Robles.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that Elizabeth be remembered with contributions to one of the following: Paso Robles Library Foundation, Knox College of Galesburg, Ill., or the Pasadena Methodist Foundation.
