James Michael “Mike” Pahler was born on July 8, 1947, in Santa Barbara, California, to James Joseph and Norma Viola Pahler. He passed away peacefully at his home on October 25, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Mike will be remembered for his wisdom, integrity, gentle humor, and unwavering patience.
Mike was raised in Santa Barbara, where he attended local schools and graduated from San Marcos High School. Growing up with his five sisters—Norma, Judy, Patricia, Deborah, and Mary—and his brother, Steve, Mike enjoyed a lively childhood filled with beach days at East Beach and swims at “The Plunge.” He loved camping in Sequoia National Park, riding horses, and raising calves. As a young man, he could often be found with friends at the Lewis Service Station or cruising State Street in his hometown.
In 1969, Mike was drafted into the United States Army and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War as part of HHB, 7th Battalion, 15th Field Artillery Regiment. His unit provided critical artillery support to U.S. and allied forces across Vietnam.
After returning home, Mike worked for Richfield Oil Company before moving to Parkfield in the early 1970s to manage his father’s ranch. It was there that fate brought him together with the love of his life, Paulette Camsuzou. Introduced by her brother Pierre while helping to move cattle, the two quickly fell in love—becoming engaged just six weeks later. Mike and Paulette were married on June 15, 1974, and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2024 surrounded by family and friends.
Together, they built a beautiful life and raised three devoted sons—James (Wesla), Matthew (Salena), and Michael (Ximena). Mike’s greatest joy came from spending time with his five grandchildren—James, Elizabeth, Sophia, Jameson, and Mia. Whether fishing, attending school events, or cheering from the sidelines, “Papa Mike” was always there with love and encouragement.
Mike’s professional life centered on James Pahler Construction, which he successfully operated for 40 years. A skilled craftsman and woodworker, he created countless projects and handmade gifts that will continue to be cherished by his family and friends. Outside of work, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, NASCAR, and football, and was a proud member of the Golden State Classic Car Club—especially fond of his 1969 Chevelle.
Mike also devoted time to his community as an active member and docent at the Paso Robles Pioneer Museum, where he shared his knowledge of design, construction, and repair with fellow volunteers and visitors alike.
Above all, Mike will be remembered for his kind heart, quick wit, and generosity of spirit. He had an extraordinary ability to connect with people from all walks of life and make everyone feel valued. His legacy of love, laughter, and craftsmanship will live on through all who knew him.
