After a long struggle with brain cancer, Kevin Weiler died peacefully at home, with his family by his side, on November 25, 2018.
Kevin was born May 12, 1951 in Aurora, Illinois to Harold J. Weiler and Emilie Danko Weiler.
He is preceded in death by his father, Harold, and survived by his mother Emilie, brother Michael, sister Kathy, wife Arlyn, sons Jay, (partner Azitta), and Zachary (wife Claire), nieces and nephews and other family members.
Kevin loved computer graphics and modeling research, ham radio (K6XXX), reading, watching science fiction movies, eating pizza, cheeseburgers, and French fries, but most of all he loved his family.
He started his career in architecture, but found his passion in the nascent field of computer graphics. He went on to become a pioneer in the field, co-developing the Weiler-Atherton clipping algorithm and numerous other programs that make possible the creation of 3D graphics used today in computer programs, films, TV, and videogames.
He graduated from University of Maryland Architecture School, went on to Cornell University for a Masters in Architectural Science, specializing in the early field of computer graphics. He was Senior Scientist and Director of the CAD-Graphics Laboratory at Carnegie Mellon University. He received his PhD, “Topological Structures for Geometric Modeling" from Renneslaer Polytechnic Institute while a Graphics Scientist at GE Research and Development. He directed the development of computer graphics and modeling hardware and software at Autodesk, Silicon Graphics, and Adobe, as well as several start-up companies.
At his request, no services will be held. Donations in his memory may be sent to the Musella Foundation For Brain Tumor Research & Information, Central Coast Hospice, (San Luis Obispo), Foothills Amateur Radio Society , or a charity of your choice.
