Deane Cobler

Deane is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ann; his two sons Mason and Drew; his daughter-in-law Karissa; his grandchildren Mason II, Fiona, Odessa, Kiarrah, Kairi, and Kendrick; his sisters-in-law Yvonne Cobler, Valerie Bowser, and Yolanda Nelson; brothers-in-law Ric Bowser and Robert McLaughlin; many nieces and nephews; and his bosom buddy Jim Giggi.

Deane was preceded in death by his parents Jim and Chris Cobler; Ann’s parents Deno and Maxine DiPietro; his sister Sonya Rothrock; his brother Robert Cobler; brother-in-law John Nelson; and his sister-in-law Tina McLaughlin.

As a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Deane’s example and unconditional love has forever changed the lives and outlooks of the members of his family and his friends.

As a patriotic citizen, Deane served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1970-1977, and was named “Soldier of the Year” in Ohio during that time.

As a mechanical engineer turned chef, Deane first graduated from The Ohio State University in 1970 and worked for Western Electric. By 1977 he had enrolled in the first-ever Apprenticeship Program in Hospitality Management at Columbus Technical Institute (now Columbus State Community College), graduating in 1980. After training chefs at Hocking Technical College (now Hocking College), and earning a degree in Education from Ohio University, Deane returned to Columbus State in 1988 as a culinary arts instructor, and the same Hospitality Management department from which he graduated. Deane retired from teaching in 2012. Deane was recognized by The Columbus chapter of the American Culinary Federation as “Chef of the Year” in 1988.

As a Christian, Deane grew up attending Linden and Beechwold Churches of Christ, served with his wife at Linden and Karl Road Baptist Churches, and wrapped up his earthly service to his Savior at Tri-Village Christian Church. Upon his passing, he was awarded his eternal residence in Heaven and hopes to see you there eventually too.

A celebration of his life, “A Memorial and a Meal,” is planned for the spring.
