From a very early age Paul loved the outdoors and spent almost every waking moment hiking and collecting flowers and various insects. Paul told his friend Richard Grant that the very first memory he could recollect was of the family dog looking down into his face when Paul was about two or three years old. When it was time to choose a major he knew without a doubt he would major in biology.
Paul chose Bowling Green State University and that is where he met on the first day Debbie Moore. After graduation, they married on August 10, 1975, and cherished almost 50 years together.
Paul earned a BA in biology at Bowling Green and a MA, Biology, at Ohio State University. He worked in environmental resource management and taught college level environmental courses as an adjunct professor at Columbus State Community College. He began his work career with Ohio EPA performing and supervising field studies over many years. He would laugh fondly recalling the numerous streams and rivers he wadded into and through with his crew sampling and recording the water and wildlife. He later worked in industry, with City of Columbus Department of Public Utilities, and with national environmental consulting companies always as the go-to expert. He collaborated and consulted on many research and environmental investigation projects with Richard Grant, his close friend. Wherever he worked his colleagues enjoyed pointing out and asking about plants or trees. Paul always knew the names and explained the backgrounds of each. He was known as “Dr Mazur”.
Paul is survived by his wife Debbie; children, Joseph and Stephanie; grandchildren, Peyton, Diego, and Issa; sister, Sue Hemsath; nieces, Tae and Meesun (Jayme); and close friend, Xavier Angeles. He is preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Mae Mazur; sister, Jane Mazur; and in-laws, Bill and Patsy Moore. Paul loved his son, Joseph, and daughter, Stephanie. He has been very proud of his grandchildren’s accomplishments.
He will be missed by his family and friends. Funeral arrangements are being made by Kauber-Fraley Funeral Home. Friends and family may call from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. with a memorial service to follow at 12:00 p.m. Thursday, August 21, 2025, at Pataskala United Methodist Church, with Rev.
