Stephen Michael Stanko

Mike was born in Chattanooga, TN, on March 9, 1981, to Stephen and Patricia Stanko. He grew up in Reynoldsburg, OH, and was a 1999 graduate of Reynoldsburg High School. Mike continued his education after his military service, earning a Master’s Degree in Logistics Management from Park University.

Mike honorably served in the United States Marine Corps from 2001-2006 with VMU-1 Watchdogs. He selflessly served three tours in Iraq in 2003, 2004, and 2005. For his actions downrange, Mike received multiple Navy Achievement Medals, a Navy Unit Commendation Medal, and the Presidential Unit Citation. Mike was also an Expert Marksman and enjoyed shooting in his free time with friends and family.

Above all of his personal achievements, Mike was most proud of his children; Lexee (23) and Reese (21). He often spoke about how their achievements outweighed his tenfold; noting their intelligence and drive as primary factors in their success. He loved them both beyond measure.

Mike was unapologetically himself; rowdy, rambunctious, and full of life. He had a way of cheering others up and making those around him laugh effortlessly. He loved shooting pool, working on cars, going to the range, watching soccer, and telling everyone that MOPAR was better than any other car manufacturer.

Those close to Mike recall his leadership, call to service, gratitude, selflessness, and never-ending love and support. Mike’s mission continued after his time in the Corps as he helped other vets who struggled with PTSD. As a result of Mike’s efforts, those same vets continue to live and fight to this day; giving eternal thanks and never forgetting the sacrifices that he made.

Mike’s family extended well beyond his bloodline, often stating that his family was the one he chose. He was preceded in death by his father, Stephen; mother, Patricia; and loyal canine companions, Rocky, Hemi, Bruno, and Braxton. He is survived by his children, Lexee and Reese; brothers, Paul (Brea), Brian (Heather), Stephen (Karyn); sister, Jennifer; uncles and aunts, Steve (Kaye), Richard (Karen), Doug (Lori); nieces and nephews, Lecia, Brynn, Bryant, Gianna, Maddax, Jacob, Briana, Dominic, Keegan, Zachary, Isabelle, and Hayden; Michael (Kimberly) Lackey; his pup, Buckeye; and countless brothers and sisters-in-arms from VMU-1 Watchdogs, the American Legion Post 283, and the United States Marine Corps.

Visitation will be held from 5:00-8:00pm on Thursday, August 20, 2026, at Kauber-Fraley Funeral Home. (289 S. Main St, Pataskala, OH, 43062)

The funeral service will begin at 11:00am on Friday, August 21, 2026, with military honors being rendered at Glen Rest Memorial Estate following the service. (8029 E. Main St, Reynoldsburg, OH, 43068)

Following the rendition of military honors, a celebration of life event will occur at American Legion Post 283. All are encouraged to attend if able. (7725 Refugee Rd, Pickerington, OH, 43147)
