Donn B Cahill

January 24, 1930December 26, 2012

Donn Cahill, an Irishman known for his helping hand and merry disposition went home to be with the Lord December 26th. As a devoted husband and loving father he is survived by his wife, Sharon Carico Cahill and their three daughters and husbands: Carrie and George Bowers, Maura and Tracy Rasmussen, and Shawna and Mark Hagerty. Families consist of ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Donn lived an active lifestyle making for some great stories, stories about growing up on his parents’ (Jim and Alene Cahill) ranch in Crystal, ID with three siblings, attending a one room school house, and participating in boxing, football, and track at Payette High School. Enlisting in the Air Force at the outbreak of the Korean War, later gave him the opportunity to attend Utah State University, where he received a B.S. in Entomology. This allowed him to work forty years for the U.S. Forest Service at a job that he absolutely loved, exploring mountains and forests in eight states and Canada. After retiring, Donn became very active in the Boise Bench Lions Club. He served as president, was a Melvin Jones Fellow, a Life Member, a Hallock-Wehmann recipient, and was Lion of the Year in1992-93 and again 1994-95. The PAWS project was very near and dear to his heart. He was also an active volunteer at the VA Hospital.

Come join family and friends as we celebrate Donn’s life during a wake conducted at the Ha’ Penny Bridge Pub, 855 Broad Street in downtown Boise. Drop in between 2pm and 5pm on December 30th.

Memorials may be made to Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation, c/o Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel, P.O. Box 730, Payette, ID 83661. Condolences can be made to Donn’s family at

Today, I was thinking fondly about a time 30 years ago, as a young girl, I got a job as an "assistant secretary" for Forest Pest Management, and met a bunch of madcap scientists who had a really weird affinity for bark beetles, mountain pine beetles and other "hideous bugs." What a great group of guys they all were, knowing full well the uniqueness of their interests, and finding humor amongst their love of insects. I Googled Donn today, and saw that he had passed. Very strange that I would be thinking of him today of all days, but I guess people make an impression on you, and you never forget them.

Sharon and family- Sue and I were shocked to learn of Donn's passing. May he rest in peace.
I always remember my first day in the R.O. in 1974. It was Donn who was running the shop as everyone else was in Oregon on WSBW projects. He guided me around and got me settled in, later introducing us to Ginger Ale and beer. He loved life and he loved the woods. He was a "hoot" to watch as we all argued over everything in the office, half the time it was Donn setting the trap. I'll miss him, as will all who worked with him.

I know Donn is walking with Jesus and look forward to the day when I see him again-I think often of our times together.

Sharon, I talked to my brother "Skeeter", aka Norman Ahrens in Washington today. We remember the Cahill's & the Carico's well, as we were old North Payette friends. I'd like to express my sympathy for your loss. Donn's obituary was interesting.
