Almeda B. Bishop

Almeda Ballenger Bishop passed away in Newnan, GA on July 7, 2026. She was born September 22, 1940, in Atlanta, GA to Mildred Ballenger. She was joined shortly thereafter by her sister, Janice Ballenger Traylor. The family moved to Jackson, GA, where Almeda spent most of her young years.

Almeda worked as a Medical Technologist at a hospital in Atlanta, GA. She then decided to go to law school, graduating from the John Marshall Law School in Atlanta, GA. There she met and later married Mitchell (Mitch) Charles Bishop II – they lived for a time in College Park, GA then moved to Newnan, GA.

Almeda and Mitch were active in St. Andrews in the Pines Episcopal Church, in Peachtree City, GA where Almeda was at times on the altar guild and sang in the choir. Both were on the Vestry, also.

Both Almeda and Mitch were also active skeet and trap shooters – Almeda held the Georgia state record for her age group in Skeet for a number of years. They both also loved playing poker – Almeda regularly played with Georgia Poker Nights, a recreational league in the Atlanta area. One year Almeda played in the main event World Series of Poker, with 10,000 players – she lasted to the second day before busting out. Almeda traveled some with her family, going to Lake Tahoe several years to celebrate the holidays and play poker.

Almeda was preceded in death by her husband, Mitch Bishop; her sister, Janice Ballenger Traylor, and Mitch’s son, Mitchell Charles Bishop III.

She is survived by Mitch’s daughter, Gloria Bishop (Kathy) Huey, and her son-in-law, James Carlsen Huey, along with their son, Neal Carlsen Huey; and her niece, Janice Traylor Plumley.

There will be a service to celebrate Almeda’s life at St. Andrews in the Pines Episcopal Church, 316 N Peachtree Pkwy, Peachtree City, at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, with a further celebration of life held at 5:00 pm at her poker hangout, The Half Shell, 1690 GA-34 in Newnan, Ga. All are welcome.
