Martin Luther King Jr. once said that the greatest measure of a man is not where he stands in the moment of comfort

and convenience but where he stands at the time of challenge and controversy. On Feb. 14, the world lost a great man

when proud husband, father, political activist and businessman Eric Mitchell lost his three-year battle with brain

cancer. Like everything in his life, he faced this fight with courage, determination and grace. He was 57.

While serving as president of a local insurance marketing and consulting firm, Wormley Mitchell and Associates,

Eric ran for and won a seat on the Austin City Council. His time on the City Council, from 1994-1997, proved to be a

good fit for Eric, who had always been an unwavering advocate for what he believed was right.

None of his professional accomplishments even came close to his personal ones, however, which included being

a loving husband to his wife, Renee. His real gift to Renee and his family, however, was his unwavering dedication

to who they were. Through times of comfort and through times of challenge and controversy, Eric was a man who

fought for what – and who -- he believed in. Now, it’s up to his family to carry on his legacy, which should be easy,

since he left in each of us a little piece of his greatness. Eric is survived by wife, Renee Mitchell, sons Deric Williams

(Eleanor) and Eric Mitchell Jr., daughters Crystal Morehouse (Percy) and Brittney Mitchell, his four grandsons; mother,

Manona Mitchell, sisters Melodi Brown (David), Stephanie Johnson (Keith), brother in-law Rodney Wormley (Gail),

sisters in-law Terri Wormley, Jeanene Williams (Joe) and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, 18 February, 2011 at 3 p.m. at the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church located at

1150 Westview Drive in Atlanta, GA. In lieu of flowers the Mitchell family asks that you make a donation in Eric's name

to the research being done by the Piedmont Brain Tumor Center, a Piedmont Hospital Service of Atlanta, GA.
