On December 22, 2014, Herbert Alexander Betts Sr. went to be with the Lord, beloved husband of the late Dorothy Marion Betts (Wolfgram) and loving father to Herbert A Betts Jr. and his wife, Caren, Thomas Betts, daughter-in-law Rong Rong Shao, Suzanne Betts and her husband, Chuck Williams, and Deborah Betts.
Herbert will be greatly missed by all his Grandchildren, Herbert Alexander Betts III and his wife Julie, Sara Betts, Jessica Betts, Jeffrey Betts, Shaolynn Betts, Cameron and Andrea Williams, and Alina and Joshua Kupras, as well as his Great Grandchildren Herbert Alexander Betts IV, CJ and Carter Williams.
Regrettably, Herbert’s sister, Jean Evans, passed away on December 17, 2014, just five days before his passing. They will both be greatly missed by all the nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Arnold Wolfgram, and sister-in-law, Anna Mae Larson and her husband, Ed, and his dearest cousin, John E. Condie, who has always been a brother to him.
Our father was born on January 9, 1929, in Chicago, Illinois, He met our mother, Dorothy Wolfgram, at AT&T in Chicago at the age of 18 years old. It was love at first sight for both of them. They were married on September 3, 1949, just shy of their 21st birthdays. They had the kind of love that movies are made of! Our father had a 39-year career with Illinois Bell and AT&T. He retired to Peachtree City, Georgia, 30 years ago at the age of 55. Our mother died on May 3, 2014, after a three-year battle with cancer. On Thanksgiving Day, our father experienced a silent heart attack. The doctor described it as a broken heart from the loss of his wife. Although it is painful to lose two parents in the same year, we are comforted in knowing that they are together with the Lord during Christmas, our Mother’s favorite time of the year.
Our Dad will be most remembered for his undying devotion to his family, his incredible warmth toward people, his strong faith in the Lord and his love of storytelling and humor. Those that love him know Heaven is a little sweeter today due to his arrival and, although our lives will never be the same without him, we will embrace the future with the joy he would want us to have. We want to thank everyone in our lives for your love and kindness toward our family and parents, especially Joan Daughtrey, Patricia Chavez and Brenda Lobaugh, and their dearest friends, Fred and Irma Schmeissing.
Herbert Alexander Betts Sr. will be waked at G. L. Hills Funeral Home in Des Plaines, Illinois, at 11:00 am on December 27, 2014. Funeral services will follow at Ridgewood Memorial Chapel at 12:30 pm.
