On March 7, 2025 Jon Dwight Matheny passed away peacefully at his home in Senoia, GA. He was born on December 4, 1937 in Los Angeles, CA and lived most of his life in Arcadia, CA until relocating in 2023. Jon was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather and friend to all that met him.
Jon is survived by his wife, Karen; his three sons Brad (Kim), Brian, and Greg (Patty); sisters, Sharon Hardy and Joan Palomares; grandchildren, Calvin, Ian, Quintin, Allison, and Declan; along with many nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dwight Leslie Matheny and Ruth Elisabeth Matheny; and brothers-in-law, Rene Palomares and Jack Hardy
Jon's early life was filled with family and adventure, often accompanying his parents and grandparents’ cross country from California to New York. Picking up new cars in Detroit and exploring the country from there. Jon loved to share stories of his youth including riding the subway as a small child in New York alone to attend a Yankee Game. He also had many fond memories of outings and camping trips with his family growing up which also included hunting and fishing adventures with his Father. He often spoke of his fairy tale childhood, riding his horse, hanging out with his Airedale Terrier “Tuffy,” and playing sports with his neighborhood friends.
Jon graduated from Arcadia High School in 1956 and joined the Army in 1957. He was granted an Honorable Discharge in 1962. During this time, he met and married Karen and shortly thereafter they began their family. He was a successful businessman being a top dry cleaner in the San Gabriel Valley where he operated three plants. He had a fantastic work ethic which produced a world class product that customers and other businesses came to expect and enjoy. Cleaning clothes on a moment’s notice for the movie industry was another specialty of the business.
Family came first for Jon. While avoiding the spotlight he made sure each family member was looked after while sharing his simple yet intriguing sense of humor. Jon placed others first and thought of himself as a simple man. Simple in sharing his heart, mind, and life skills which easily captured the attention of family and friends alike. He took a keen interest in the individual passions of his children/grandchildren and involved himself to the extent possible. He made it a point to never miss a game, school performance, or club activity that his sons were involved in. Jon’s joyful participation was always welcomed and desired. Jon loved horses and owned several racehorses over the years. He could often be found at Santa Anita just visiting the paddock, having breakfast during morning workouts, watching the races, and meeting his wife for lunch while she was working at the track. His love of music, sport, travel, and family gatherings brought him and others around him great joy.
We pray for the eternal repose of this soul; may he rest in peace.
Jon wished to be cremated and his remains scattered in Ireland - a place he visited with his sons many years ago that holds special memories for all.
