Joseph Wayne Flynn, lovingly known as Wayne to all who knew him, passed away peacefully on February 22, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on May 8, 1938, in College Park, Georgia, he was the son of Anton and Flora Flynn, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Pat Smith and Loyce Flynn.
Wayne is survived by his wife, Joann Flynn; his son, Scott Flynn and Scott’s wife, Suzanne Flynn; and his daughter, April Gallagher and her husband, Mike Gallagher. He was a proud and loving grandfather — known affectionately as “Papa” — to Sean Flynn and his wife Amy, Sara Flynn, and Anthony Garruto and his wife Alicia, and a joyful great-grandfather to Reagan McIntyre Flynn. Family was the center of Wayne’s life, and he was unwaveringly loving, caring, and completely committed to those he cherished most.
Wayne never met a stranger. He carried an infectious smile, a booming laugh, and a gift for storytelling that could brighten any room. His optimism and humor were constants in his life and in the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know him. He had a rare ability to make people feel welcome, valued, and at ease, and he would truly give the shirt off his back to help someone in need.
Prior to his business career, Wayne proudly served his country as a member of the elite 101st Airborne Division, an experience that reflected his courage, discipline, and enduring love of country. He later became a second-generation partner of Welding Supply and Service Company, where he and his partner, Jimmy Turner, carried forward the business built by their fathers. Together they led the company with integrity and success, supported by a loyal and dedicated team, until their retirement in the late 1980s.
A graduate of College Park High School, Wayne had earlier distinguished himself as fullback on the football team under the legendary Coach Badgett. During the years he and his family lived in College Park, he was a devoted Little League football coach, investing countless hours in mentoring young athletes and building community through sport. He later relocated his family to their cherished home in Sharpsburg, Georgia, where deep family roots were established and lifelong friendships were formed.
Wayne was a constant and enthusiastic presence in his children’s lives and activities, serving as a committed booster for his son, daughter, their teammates, and cheer-mates during their years at East Coweta High School. He took great pride in supporting youth, school spirit, and the community that surrounded his family.
In later years, before moving to Key West, Florida, Wayne spent a decade in Savannah, Georgia, where he worked as an associate with Walmart. True to his nature, his infectious smile was often the first thing customers saw when they entered the store, and he formed countless friendships through his warmth and daily greetings. He also shared many treasured years with a close circle of friends affectionately known as the “Savannah Rat Pack,” whose camaraderie brought him great joy.
Wayne spent his final years in Key West, Florida, where he was blessed by the compassionate care and friendship of the Palm Vista community. His faith was a guiding light throughout his life. A believer in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, Wayne lived with gratitude and joy and now rests in peace, reunited with the family and friends who went before him.
Wayne will be forever remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, coach, and friend — a man whose kindness, humor, and generous spirit left a lasting imprint on every life he touched.
