Marelle (Margaret Ellen) Wright Chapman age 90 of Peachtree City passed away peacefully on October 10, 2013. She was born in Canton, Georgia on December 14, 1922 to the late Henry Fleming Wright and Pearl Odessa Whitaker Wright. She graduated from Canton High School in 1938 and Tift College in 1942. She also attended Emory University and Atlanta University.
Marelle taught mathematics for almost forty years at Morgan County High School, Reinhardt College, Southwest DeKalb High School, and Russell High School; she was also a three-time Fulton County Star Teacher during her 25 years at Headland High School.
Marelle was an excellent math teacher and coach of the Headland High School Math Team. According to one of her students, Kim Kienzle Deutsch, “…she had extremely high expectations for her students and pushed them to live up their potential”. She was always very proud of her students and their accomplishments. She kept in touch with those that she taught and received well wishes from many of them at her 90th birthday party last December.
Marelle was very serious about math. Her cousin, Joe Davis, recalls hearing her talk about the correct way to write decimals on WSB radio. She called the station one night after a Braves game to let them know the television broadcast was displaying the numbers incorrectly. After retirement, she loved helping at her church on a regular basis.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Hodges Gilbert Chapman. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Gilbert and Susan Chapman of Peachtree City; granddaughter, Catherine Chapman of Peachtree City; sister, Mary Alice Wright Worley of Alpharetta, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
