Nelson Ray Smith passed away on February 15, 2023 at the age of 84, in Franklin, GA. He was born in Wallback, WV on August 30, 1938 in his parents’ home. He attended a two room school in which two teachers taught grades 1st-4th and 5th-8th. Nelson grew up in Twistabout, WV.
A dumbwaiter accident at work left Nelson paralyzed for 43 years. However, Nelson never let his disability hold him back. He was known to mow the lawn, cut tree branches, and move home furniture all from his wheelchair. He like to fish and play bingo. His sense of humor kept him going for many years.
Nelson is preceded in death by his parents, French William Smith and Alva Gustava Deems Smith; and two brothers.
He is survived by his life partner of 24 years, Millie Whitehead, of Franklin, GA; his daughter, Theresa Blair; two grandchildren; his half-sister, Mary Jane Runion; and several nieces and nephews.
Nelson’s last desire was to travel back to West Virginia before he passed. Although this was not physically possible for him to do, his remains, will however, be returned to West Virginia and will be laid to rest in Deems Cemetery in Twistabout.
Nelson will be dearly missed by his family.
