Nuel was predeceased by his parents, Charles E. and Erma Lois Lumry Brown; and his older brother, Chuck. Nuel is survived by his best friend and loving wife, of almost 40 years, Gail Taylor Brown; his daughter, Linda Kay Brown (Daniel Gibson); granddaughter, Tiffany Woods (Bruce) Brown; grandson, Raymond Wayne (Chasity) Pawvlik, Jr.; great-granddaughters, Haley, Katelynn and Cacee; step-son, Richard Brett Silvey (Shelley Lloyd); his cousin, Betty Tarwater and her family; and step-great grandsons, Beaux (Valerie), Wade, and Colby. He also leaves behind his two beloved doggies, Taybo and Tybo; nieces, nephews, cousins, and numerous friends.
At Argentine High School he was the 1st chair violinist. After graduation he joined the Army National Guard and was a drummer in the Army marching band for several years.
Almost simultaneously, after high school he went to work at International Paper Company, in the Liquid Packaging Division manufacturing paper milk and juice cartons. He worked his way up from press operator to upper management fairly quickly and was with them for 28 ½ years. They moved him from Kansas City to other cities; Bastrop, LA; Waco, TX; then Atlanta, GA, They sent him to bring the flagging operations in those cities back to profitability.
Nuel was a 32-degree Mason and a Shriner for many years.
After he left International Paper, he used his experience to become an independent consultant traveling around the country then to foreign countries including Canada, Turkey, Greece, Israel, and the island of St. Vincent in the Caribbean. He then went to work for another company in Jacksonville, FL, where he and Gail lived for 3 years. His work in St. Vincent led the company there to offer him a management position at their operation in Jamaica where he and Gail lived for almost six years.
When they moved back to the United States, they moved to Fairburn, GA., but there was no longer any interest in his experience in packaging manufacturing. That’s when he attended truck driving school and went to work at J B Hunt as an over-the-road driver. That didn’t last very long. He wanted to stay at home and work.
God provided him and Gail with an opportunity to both be employed at Geo. H. Green Oil, Inc. / Greenway Stores, Inc., for almost 20 years. There he drove fuel tankers for about sixteen years then became the marketing inspector for the company, winning top national honors for the appearance of the company-owned convenience stores.
He retired, when he was 78 years old, in 2013, but would only retire then because the wonderful Christian folks at Green Oil were generous and caring and made it all work for him and Gail to retire together.
In May of 2004, he and Gail began attending Mt. Vernon Missionary Baptist Church. Very soon after that Nuel gave his life to Christ and was baptized. Nuel loved singing in the church choir and remained a loyal member right up until Jesus took him home to sing in God’s choir. It didn’t matter where he was (doctor’s office, hospital, dialysis center, grocery store), he was always telling people about Jesus.
Nuel was a God fearing but fun loving man who enjoyed boating, camping, traveling, watching sports, smoking meats of all kinds and spending time with his family, friends and the fur babies. He will be greatly missed here on earth but he’d love for you to join him in heaven when God sees fit to take you home.
Nuel’s Homegoing Service will be October 20, 2019, at Mt. Vernon Missionary Baptist Church at 2:30 pm.
If you wish to honor Nuel’s memory, in lieu of flowers, please make donations to Mt. Vernon Missionary Baptist Church, 5675 Highway 92 N, Fairburn, GA 30213.
