Retired Major Richard L. Gardner, age 82 of Fayetteville, Georgia passed away at his home Tuesday, June 15, 2021.  He was surrounded by his five children and wife, Ingrid, of 60 years. He was born in Rocky River, Ohio on March 27, 1939.

Richard enlisted in the military in 1958 becoming a 101st Airborne Screaming Eagle before commissioning as an officer in 1968.  He served in Vietnam from 1968-1969 and then in Korea from 1974-1975.  He received his Bachelors in History from Marian College, Indianapolis, IN, in 1974.  As Captain, Richard was assigned to US Army Forces Command at Ft. McPherson, GA, and later retired as Major Gardner from the United States Army on March 31st, 1980.  Richard then became a JROTC Instructor for the Fulton County School System and retired in 2001 as Director, JROTC program. He was known and loved as “Opi” by his eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.  As an active member of the Providence United Methodist Church, he volunteered with mission trips and worked with the youth group.  Richard loved carpentry; working on his home, his children’s homes, at the church, or wherever he was needed.

Richard is preceded in death by his parents, Beatrice and Carl S. Gardner; and a brother, Carl A. Gardner.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Mrs. Ingrid Agnes Gardner; his sons, Karl Heinz Gardner (Michelle) and David Lee Gardner (Brenda); his daughters, Christine Gardner, Deborah Gardner Kirkland (Steve), and Diana Gardner McConnell (Tim); his grandchildren, Rebecca Price (Jon), Katherine Price, Kayla Reed (Kenny), Heinz Gardner II, Stevee Kirkland, Maria Gardner, Asher McConnell, and Analiza McConnell; and his great-grandchildren, Lilliana Hall, Konor Reed, and Katruth Reed.

One thing Richard was known and loved for was his military humor.  “Get off your dead bottoms and on your dying feet.  We’ve got a battle to fight and a war to win!” "Rise and shine".

Memorial services will be held at 11:00am, Saturday, June 19, 2021 at the Providence United Methodist Church, 592 Bernhard Road, Fayetteville, GA 30215. Rev Herb Flanders and Pastor Jimmy Ellison will officiate the services. The family will greet friends, at a reception, following services.

A private interment will be held at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia.
