Roy Norman Grayson
April 12, 1923 – July 23, 2020
Roy Norman Grayson was born April 12, 1923 in Chicago, Illinois. He passed away July 23, 2020 in the peace of the home he shared with his companion and caregiver, Mattie Bradshaw, in Sharpsburg, Georgia.
Roy is survived by his sister, Lenore Thorsen; his daughter, Royce Grayson Morse; three grandchildren, Valerie, Anthony and Veronica Morse; and a great-grandson, Sebastian Morse.
Roy’s brother, Kent Grayson, preceded him in death.
Roy spent most of his life in the Chicago area, working in sales and sales management. After he was discharged from the Army, where he was deployed during WWII, he met and married Claire Carpenter, a coworker at one of his first jobs. In the 1960s, the couple, along with their young daughter Royce, relocated to Elmhurst, Illinois. The family traveled to most of the 50 states, and also visited Fiji, Tahiti, Australia and New Zealand. Roy enjoyed scuba diving and dove the Great Barrier Reef. Roy was also an avid contract bridge player and participated in many tournaments. He was a rockhound as well, collecting mineral specimens and fossils. When he retired, he started up a small business importing and selling minerals to collectors. Eventually, Roy and Claire moved to Arizona, and later to Gwinnett County, Georgia, to be near their daughter Royce. Claire passed away in 2008, following a short illness.
Always a card player, Roy left the contract bridge scene to play cribbage. It was there he met Mattie Bradshaw, a widow. The two developed a close relationship and Roy moved in with Mattie. The two struck up friendships with other cribbage players, traveling to cribbage tournaments, and spent many enjoyable hours playing cards and games at home.
Roy’s sense of humor and kindness will be remembered by all who knew him. He was a man of his word, honest and trustworthy. He loved silly puns, a mental challenge and ice cream. He will be dearly missed.
