

He was born on February 10, 1952 in Franklin, GA to the late Annie Ruth Ridley Nelson and T.V. Nelson. He graduated from Campbell High School in 1972. After careful consideration, Thurmon entered the US Navy in 1979 and served for 20 years until his retirement. His last service was aboard the USS Emory S. Land AS-39 in Norforlk, VA. During his service with the US Navy, he received a Navy Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Battle “E” Ribbons (2), Good Conduct Award (5), Humanitarian Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, and a Letter of Commendation. He then became a member of the Fleet Reserve.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Raymond Nelson; and sister, Gloria Nelson.
He is survived by his wife, Bobbie Nelson; sons, Reo Nelson (Terra) and Kevin Nelson; step-sons, Rickey Johnson and Dicky Johnson; step-daughter, Ameshaw Wilder (Marcus); grandchildren, Laylah Nelson, Reo Nelson, Jr.; step-grandchildren, Marcus Wilder Jr. (Breshai), Alexa Wilder; along with a host of other grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brothers, Vernon Nelson and Willie Nelson; sisters, Darlene Bryant, Shelvia Knox, Phyllis Shields, and Velma Smith; plus numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his ex-wife/mother of his two sons, Janette Nelson.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held on Monday, October 4, 2021 at 1:00pm, with Dr. Vincent Dortch officiating. The services will be held in the chapel of Carmichael-Hemperley Funeral Home, 135 Senoia Road, Peachtree City, GA 30269, with The US Navy Honor Guard presenting military honors.
