She was born May 8, 1930, in McCool, Mississippi, a daughter of the late J.T. Howell and Liza Clatie Barrett Howell. Burtie was born into a large family with several siblings, and she learned at a young age the love of our Lord, the value of family, and the dignity of honest labor. She carried these truths throughout her life and exemplified them for all who knew her.
Burtie was a devoted wife and mother and she delighted in caring for her family. She truly saw joy in all that she did, whether growing her vegetable garden, tending to the animals on her farm, or cooking for her family. She loved to share the bounty of her garden with friends and neighbors and she cherished the times when those she loved gathered around her table.
Her early career years were spent in the service of children. She was a substitute teacher for the Flora School System and a bus driver for Tri-County Academy in Flora. Later she joined her husband as the bookkeeper for his business, Peden’s Auto Repair.
Burtie was a long time member of Franklin Baptist Church in Flora.
In addition to her parents and many siblings she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 75 years, W.D. Peden, Sr., and her son, Robert Peden.
She is survived by sons, William D. Peden, Jr., and Cecil Peden; daughter, Patricia Walter; daughters-in-law, Brenda Peden, and Luanne Peden; ten grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 9:00am until 10:00am, Saturday, September 2, 2023, at Franklin Baptist Church in Flora. Funeral services will follow at 10:00am at the church with interment in the Bethel Cemetery.
