his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Thursday, October 21, 2021.
Charles was born August 8, 1936 in Crystal Springs, MS to Fox and Maggie French Watson. He
graduated from Forest Hill High School and attended Mississippi State University before joining
the US Air Force. He returned to Brandon a year ago from Eagle Lake, MS, living there 18 years
and was a dedicated member of Eagle Lake Methodist Church.
“Charlie” loved aviation and enjoyed a long military career proudly serving our country in the US
Air Force for 40 years. “Chief Watson'' or “Chief” was highly respected as a Chief Master
Sergeant in the Mississippi Air National Guard, retiring in 1996 having accrued over 15,000
flying hours. He transported cargo and troops in and out of countries around the world, serving
through the Vietnam War, in the US invasion of Panama in Operation Just Cause and in the
Persian Gulf War in Operation Desert Storm. Late in his career, he flew an incredible Naval
Supply Mission trip around the world, departing from the east coast and landing in California.
He was an avid hunter and enjoyed a lifelong membership in Karnac Hunting Club in Port
Gibson, MS. He loved all types of fishing but his favorite was fishing for Rainbow trout in Lake
Taneycomo in Missouri, where he and his wife, Becky, vacationed often. They enjoyed many
years of traveling and camping all over the US and even thought about moving to Alaska years
ago because it was so beautiful. Dogs held a special place in his and Becky’s heart and they have
loved and nurtured countless hunting and rescue doggies over the years, spoiling them all
rotten. He will be greatly missed by all 5 of his current dogs: Spencer, Buddy Buck, Copper, Sam
and especially Biscuit, who was so protective of her daddy. Charles is probably petting his most
beloved dog, Bullet, right now, who passed on many years ago.
“Mr. Watson” was also a jack of all trades. There was not much he could not do and what he
did, he did very well. He was a meticulous craftsman and a perfectionist when it came to
construction. He remodeled and built several beautiful homes in his lifetime; 2 for himself as
well as for friends. He was a man of few words, known to be tough as nails and strong as an ox,
but also as gentle as a teddy bear all at the same time.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Fox and Maggie Watson, Sisters Margaret Ann
Sessums, Mary Hinderk and Shirley Gill; brothers Bobby Watson and Robert Earl Watson and
granddaughter, Margaret Ann (Maggie) Campbell.
He leaves behind his wife, Sara Rebecca (Becky) who called him “Sweet baby”; Children, Dianne
Switzer (Jack), Sandra Campbell (Andy) and Chuck Watson; grandchildren Brittany Schiappa,
Julia Kowalski, Brock Ainsworth, Hunter Ainsworth, Marshall Campbell, Tyler Watson, Zach
Watson; and 15 great grandchildren, all who lovingly called him “PapPaw” or “PapPaw
Airplane”.
He was lovingly known by many names over his lifetime and will be greatly missed by so many
wonderful friends and the family he leaves behind. But we know we will all be together again
one day in Heaven and what a joyous day that will be!!
