

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at Baldwin-Lee Funeral Home in Pearl. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment followed in Garden of Memories Cemetery, Florence, MS.
Don was born in Pace, MS on February 27, 1936. He graduated from Drew High School in Drew, MS.
Don married Betty Sue Carpenter on May 18, 1956 and soon after moved to Florence, MS and drove a gasoline truck. He then worked and years later retired from the United States Postal Service. He served on the Florence Volunteer Fire Department and Police Department and as an Alderman with the City of Florence. However, Don was best known as the owner and operator of West Quick Stop in Star, MS where he served the community for 26 years.
For many years he and his wife enjoyed traveling and were members of the Country Western Dancers Association. Upon retirement, “Grandaddy” enjoyed spending his time at home with family, especially his great-grandchildren and was a charter member of the Saturday morning Star Coffee Club.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, John Rivers West, Kate Rebecca and Donald Wilson; brothers, Ted West, Quincy West and Bobby West; sister, Sadie Smith; and grandson Joshua Sullivan.
Don leaves behind his wife of 61 years, Betty Sue West; daughters, Donna Austin (Jay) of Richland, Debbie Cook (Mike) of Star, Penny Sullivan (Ricky) of Florence; 5 grandchildren, Trey Austin, Brandy Byrd (Adam), Kyle Bell (Samantha), Johnathan Sullivan, and Blake Cook; 7 great-grandchildren, Cayden Corbin, Payden Austin, Malachi Byrd, Carlie Austin, Maddox Bell, Jamison Byrd, and Denver Bell; sisters, Belle Barron, Jane Dill (Theron), and Maxine Churchwell (Johnny).
