Frank (Feng-Keng) Chang was born in Anhui, China, on Feb. 12, 1922. A graduate of Hunan University, he later attended St. Louis University, where he completed his Master's degree in geophysics in 1957.
From December 1958 - March 1960, he was a member of the U.S. Marie Byrd Land scientific expedition and became the first Chinese person to explore Antarctica. In recognition of this achievement, Chang Peak in Antarctica was named in his honor.
During the late 1960s, Frank moved with his wife Shu and son to Mississippi, where he worked as a Research Seismologist at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Waterways Experiment Station until his retirement. He and Shu enjoyed living in Vicksburg for 50 years until her death in 2019; see her obituary also.
Frank continued to follow his passions of Chinese history and calligraphy until he passed away at Brookdale Senior Living in Clinton, MS, on September 10, 2019. He is survived by his son Larry, daughter-in-law Dinah McFarlane, and granddaughter Linnea.
