Hugh Ellis Jones

Hugh Ellis Jones, 75, of Pearl, Mississippi, died October 30, 2010 at University Medical Center of complications from a fall. He was born April 8, 1935, in Leake County the oldest child of J. Cecil and Marguerite Wright Jones. The first years of his education were at Walnut Grove later moving to Pearl, lettering in Pirate sports and graduating as valedictorian of the Class of 1953. After receiving his chemical engineering degree at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, he worked in the oil industry nationally and internationally. Along with his father, he was involved in housing construction in Pearl in the 70s and 80s. Retiring in 2000 as a chemical engineer from Pursue Energy Corporation in Rankin County, he spent as much time as possible at deer camp improving the land, planting trees, rebuilding his cabin, fishing, and hunting. Always a Pearl Pirate, he was often seen attending local sporting events, festivals and celebrations in Pearl and in Mississippi as well as walking and biking. Recently, he was enjoying the challenge of researching the Jones, Tatum, Wright, and Chamblee family histories and reconnecting with extended members of those families.

Hugh is survived by his children, Joe Waylon Haney (Debra), John Richard Haney (Kristi), and Cyndi Kay Crawford; brother, Dwight C. Jones; sisters Hilda Nichols, Erma Gay Jones, and Latricia Graves (Randy); grandchildren, Amy Rosenberg (Matt), JoJo Haney (Sarah), Sara Haney and Andy Haney; and a number of aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved “Pa” and “Ma” Jones, Jesse Eugene and Venie; and wives, Mary Ann Jones and Ouida Jones.

Family and friends will receive visitors at Baldwin-Lee Funeral Home in Pearl on Tuesday, November 2, 2010 from 4:00pm to7:00pm. Funeral Services will be conducted by Dr. J. Steve Jackson in the chapel of Baldwin Lee in Pearl on Wednesday, November 3 at 10:00am. Interment will follow at Floral Hills Memory Garden in the family plot with his mentor and father J. Cecil Jones.
