Married for 60 years to Walter A. Townsend (Bob) who preceded her in death in 2005, she supported him as an Army wife. She started work as a clerk/typist and continued to work in government service at various posts where Bob was stationed until going to work for the IRS in Baton Rouge after Bob retired. She earned several Sustained Superior Performance Awards during her career.
After retiring in Baton Rouge, she and Bob bought a motor home and continued to travel. They joined the Cruisin’ Cajuns Chapter of the Family Motor Coach Association. They enjoyed traveling with the group to rallies in Louisiana and around the country. She rose to become President of that Chapter.
While raising their three children, she and Bob tried to keep them engaged in activities for the family and for the children themselves - Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, youth church activities and raising and showing championship Appaloosa horses while stationed in Shreveport and South Carolina.
Katherine is survived by her three children; Buddy Townsend and wife Sandy; Kathie Belle Harrison; Bill Townsend and wife Cindy; grandchildren, Amy Townsend, Matt Townsend, Jeff Townsend, Amanda Martin, Lisa Naquin, and Nancy Pipkin; 14 great grandchildren, plus many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00am, Monday, June 7, 2021, in the Hazlehurst Cemetery, Hazlehurst, Mississippi, where she will be buried by her husband, parents, and brother.
