On August 23, 2026, Patricia “Pat” Carol Speer Furlow, 77, of Pearl, Mississippi, stepped peacefully into eternity, welcomed into the loving arms of God and reunited with the cherished souls who preceded her.
Her story began in Canton, Mississippi, on September 2, 1948, when she was born to James Walter Speer, Jr. and Emma Myrtis Slade Speer.
Authentic to her core, Pat was wonderfully direct and never pretended to be anyone other than who she was. Her straightforward nature was matched by a vibrant energy and a free spirit, exemplified in the simple joys she found in playing softball, riding horses, and water skiing. She was honest, hardworking, and fiercely independent—qualities that shaped the woman she was. She was truly an unforgettable soul whose fierce integrity left an indelible impression on everyone around her.
In the workplace, as everywhere else, Pat brought her genuine self. Through her time with Stuart C. Irby Company, the Mississippi Tax Commission, and Mississippi Farm Bureau, Pat built a vast circle of lifelong friends, filling her life with memories and companions she treasured forever. She later retired from the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks—a career that suited her compassionate heart and moral compass.
Above all, Pat was deeply cherished by the family and friends who meant everything to her. She was a loving, devoted big sister to her younger sister Joyce, as well as a dedicated mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She delighted in life’s simple treasures—family gatherings filled with laughter and the quiet joy of a phone call. Pat truly loved to talk, holding a rare gift for conversation that allowed her to connect with literally anyone she met. She never knew a stranger, only friends she hadn't talked to yet. That same generous compassion flowed naturally into her love for animals, a deep passion she carried in her heart throughout her entire life.
Pat is preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Jimmy and Billy.
Her memory will be forever cherished by her sons, James “Scooter” Furlow (Donna) and Preston Furlow; her grandchildren, Michael Furlow (Brittney), Kyle Furlow, Lauren Furlow, Zachary Furlow, and Tariana Harper (Kela); and her great-grandchildren, Carson, Avery, Annie, and Emmett Furlow. She also leaves behind her younger sister Joyce Woodward (Sam) who will miss her dearly, along with a host of beloved nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.
In honor of Pat’s lifelong love for animals and in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Rankin County Animal Shelter (710 Marquette Rd, Brandon, MS 39042) or to an animal shelter of your choice.
The family will hold a private service to celebrate her life at a later date.
