She was born May 26, 1935, in Neshoba County, Mississippi, a daughter of the late William Leslie Bounds and Lucy Virginia Sharp Bounds.

Velma served as the City Clerk of Flowood for several years and retired from the Mississippi Department of Transportation after more than 10 years in the administrative division. Velma’s community was important to her and she was very civic minded. She was a member of the Flowood Exchange Club and routinely served as a poll manager during elections. Velma was always ready to give of her time and talent to assist her neighbors and community in any way she could.

Velma’s favorite role was that of a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She delighted in caring for her family and was never happier than when they gathered for holidays and family reunions. She also took great pride in her home and yard- only Velma was allowed to cut Velma’s grass! In her free time Velma could be found bowling and relaxing with friends and family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Paul Wilson, Sr.; brothers, W.R. Bounds, J.W. Bounds, Calvert Bounds, and G.A. Bounds; sister, Ophelia Comans; and grandson, John Paul “Johnny” Wilson, III.

Survivors include sons, John Paul Wilson, Jr., and Hugh E. Bridges and wife Sylena; daughters, Janice O’Neal and husband Jerry, Paula Kelly, and Penny Wilson; brothers, Martin Bounds, and Robert Bounds; sister, Motha Jayroe; 14 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren with another little blessing on the way.

I met Miss Wilson shortly after hurricane Katrina and soon learned how much of a beautiful caring lady she was. She was 100% dedicated to caring for all she knew....her family.....her friends....and even those she didnt know. She will always be known as a woman who loved all. Will miss her dearly.

When I was in my late teens we girls would all get together at Ma Bounds and fix hair and just visit with each other. Velma was always a great inspiration to us as to look our best. She was a well loved person by all who knew her. RIP Velma
