Wanda was born March 4, 1944, in Hazlehurst, Mississippi, a daughter of the late Sammy G. Carlisle and Ruby Eugenia Purser Carlisle.
In 1961 Wanda married the love of her life, George Benton, and they were blessed with three children and six grandchildren. Wanda was a faithful member of Flowood Baptist Church for many years until her declining health prohibited her from attending.
Wanda was the true definition of a Southern lady. Gentle and affectionate she also possessed inner strength and perseverance. Whether going to church, a doctor’s appointment or simply to the store, Wanda never left her home unkempt. She took pride in her appearance, always matching her shoes and purse, and having her hair, nails and cosmetics just so.
Her innate eye for detail carried over into the many crafts she created. A gifted artisan Wanda loved to design meticulously adorned decorations and gifts. She also enjoyed floral designing and appreciated the beauty of all flowers.
Some of Wanda’s favorite memories were the many years she taught dance alongside her best friend, Beverly Smith.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 60 years, George Durant Benton; son, George D. Benton, Jr.; daughters, Tonya Grubbs and husband Matt, and Tammy Toney and husband Dave; grandchildren, Adrienne Benton, Alyssa Benton, Reagan Grubbs, Benton Grubbs, Blake Biard, and Kenzie Toney; and sister, LaVerne Myers.
Visitation will be held from 1:00pm until 2:30pm, Friday, May 27, 2022, at Baldwin-Lee Funeral Home in Pearl. Private family funeral services will be held at a later time.
