Dorothy Johana West, affectionately known as "Dor," passed away peacefully at the age of 94 on February 28, 2024, completing her earthly journey. She was born on April 6, 1929, in Portland, Jamaica, to James and Georgiana West, the youngest of twin girls and the ninth child in the family.
Dorothy received her education at Mount Pleasant Elementary and Primary School, followed by Titchfield High School in Portland, Jamaica. She furthered her studies in nursing and Midwifery, later dedicating her life to caring for the elderly and disadvantaged, often volunteering within her church and community. Alongside her nurturing spirit, Dorothy was also skilled as a seamstress and a gifted horticulturist.
A devout worshipper and devoted reader of the Bible, Dorothy's faith journey led her to membership in the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) denomination, where she participated in the choir at North Street SDA church in Jamaica. Later in life, she became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ in Clarendon, Jamaica. In October 2012, Dorothy migrated to the USA, where she resided with her daughter, Kareen Chin and family, until her passing.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, eight siblings, and three children: daughter Nadia, sons Fitzroy, and Greenwich. She leaves behind a legacy of love cherished by her surviving family members: daughters Jennifer, Kareen, Sharon; sons Gurland, Nicol; son-in-law Andrew Chin; and dear friend Robert "Neville" Walker. Dorothy's memory will also be cherished by numerous relatives, including grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.
A celebration of Dorothy's life will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at 11:00 am Forest Park South Funeral Home, located at 12650 Shadow Creek Parkway, Pearland, TX, 77584.
