Elsa Molina Gianakos, a proud Texan with deep roots in her Mexican heritage, passed away after a courageous eight-year battle with end-stage renal disease on April 20, 2025. Though legally blind, Elsa remained fiercely independent, embodying strength and grace until her final days. She was cared for by her devoted spouse, Joseph Gianakos, who stood by her side through every trial, but her will to do things her way never waned.
Born and raised in the East End of Houston — or as she proudly called it, “Second Ward for life” — Elsa knew firsthand the meaning of perseverance. Raised in a large, loving family by her mother, Faustina Molina, the sole provider, Elsa learned early what it meant to work hard and care deeply for others.
Raised Catholic, Elsa’s walk with Christ grew stronger throughout her life. She was a faithful Christian woman who worshiped at several churches over the years, including Gateway Community Church in Sugar Land and Grace Church in Houston. Her faith was a constant in her life — a guiding light through hardship and joy alike. Worshipping the Lord brought her great joy, and her relationship with God gave her peace, especially in her final moments.
Elsa embraced life with open arms and a loving spirit. She enjoyed the company of her friends, family, and loved ones, and she took great joy in simple pleasures and shared experiences. She was highly competitive — especially when it came to Uno and Monopoly — and was known for her playful but fierce spirit in every game.
Elsa loved to travel, and she took great pride in being a trucker’s wife, joining her husband on the road and seeing the beauty of the open country. Cruising to foreign lands, spending time at the beach, watching dolphins, and enjoying Galveston’s Beach Pocket #3 brought her peace and happiness. And perhaps nothing delighted her more than a good slice of cake.
She worked for many years as a payroll clerk for Harris County Adult Supervision and Corrections, and it was through her job at a plasma bank in 1998 that she met her beloved husband. They were married in April 2001, and their bond was rooted in love, faith, and mutual respect — a true partnership that brought strength and comfort to both.
When doctors and nurses gently explained that the life-sustaining measures were no longer enough, Elsa accepted the news with the same strength and faith that defined her life. She knew to whom her soul belonged, and she knew where she was going. She passed peacefully just five hours after entering comfort care, going home to be with the Lord God Almighty. She fought the good fight with grace and courage, and now she rests in eternal peace.
Elsa is survived by her loving mother, Faustina Molina; her sisters, Norma Molina, Laura Luis, Rosie Macedo, and Diana Shackister; and her brother, Carlos Molina. She was like a second mother to many of her nieces and nephews, especially Veronica Gonzalez, Mark Gonzalez, Ruben Vasquez, and Josh, all of whom she cherished deeply. Also left behind are her sweet cats, Cheddie and Snuggie.
She is preceded in death by her beloved nephew Eddie; her grandparents, Felipa and Faustina Gonzalez and Vera Murle; and her beloved cat Thunder.
Elsa had many friends and loved ones whose lives were touched by her kindness and generosity. She was the type of person who didn’t need to be asked — if she saw someone in need, she simply helped.
To her husband Joseph, she was more than a partner; she was the better half, the one who brought light, balance, and completeness to life. Their shared faith and love were the foundation of their life together.
Glory and praise be to God Almighty for Elsa; a woman of strength, joy, deep love, and unwavering faith. She will be dearly missed, but her legacy lives on in every heart she touched.
