With hearts full of love and gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the passing of Mrs. Gloria Lillian Jones of Houston, Texas, who received her heavenly wings on the morning of May 19, 2025, at the age of 94. She was the cherished daughter of the late Carmen St. Julian and Christopher Columbus Gunter, and was lovingly raised in part by both, her grandmother Willie Mae Plummer and her stepmother, Alma Gunter.
Born on May 12, 1931, Gloria was a woman of profound faith, exceptional kindness, and steadfast devotion. She was the beloved wife of the late Rev. Dr. Samuel P. Jones Sr., with whom she shared over 50 blessed years of marriage. Together they nurtured a family grounded in love, service, and unwavering faith in God.
Gloria was a graduate of Phillis Wheatley High School and went on to earn and complete various certifications and credentials. She spent her formative years between Sawdust Alley in Houston’s Fifth Ward and San Francisco, California, enriching her life with diverse experiences and deep community roots.
She was an amazing mother, gifted musician, anointed minister, faithful pastor’s wife, devoted daughter, and a beloved friend to many. Her life’s mission was to serve the Lord and His people, and she fulfilled that calling with grace, compassion, and strength.
She is survived by her loving children:
Clifford Jefferson, Telita Jefferson, Marcietta Pendleton, Rita Francis, Linda J. Jones (Junior), Christopher C. Jones (Claudia), Rev. John W. Jones (Tina), Judy A. Tyler, Ricky L. Jones, Kenneth D. Jones, Jessie L. Jones and Van W. Wilcox Jr.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Rev. Dr. Samuel P. Jones Sr., and her cherished children: Gloria Dean Johnson, Sandra M. Jones, Samuel Paul Jones Jr., and James H. Pendleton III.
Her legacy lives on through a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends, all of whom were touched by her love, wisdom, and generosity.
Mrs. Jones was a beacon in the Fidelity, Galena Manor, Clinton Park, Pleasantville, and surrounding Houston communities. Her home at 3202 Fidelity Road was a haven of hospitality — where all were welcomed, fed, and loved. She gave freely, without hesitation, and lived each day as a true and humble servant of God. A passionate disciple of Christ, Gloria ministered to all she encountered, often sharing the Gospel through her powerful voice and testimony. She especially found joy in visiting nursing homes, where she lifted spirits through heartfelt gospel music and prayer.
Her life was a living testimony of unshakable faith, unconditional love, and boundless service. She touched countless lives, and her legacy will continue through the generations who were blessed to know her.
