Josephine Martinez Silva, lovingly known as “Josie,” was born on August 26, 1932, on her grandparents’ ranch in Wharton, Texas. She passed away peacefully in her home on June 2, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.
Josie’s life was a testament to strength, perseverance, and unconditional love. Her humble beginnings were marked by tragedy when she lost both of her parents, Paulina and Ruperto Martinez, at the ages of 6 and 8, respectively. As a young girl, she helped raise her sisters, learning early the values of responsibility, sacrifice, and resilience that would define her life.
At the age of 37, Josie was widowed and faced the challenge of raising four children on her own. Through sheer determination, she provided for her family and taught her children to be strong and self-reliant. She never stopped pursuing her goals and at age 78, returned to school to complete her certified nursing license.
Josie found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She had a gift for gardening and created beautiful gardens that earned “Yard of the Month” more times than we can count. She loved music, laughter, gathering with family, watching her beloved Houston Astros, a good margarita and trying her luck at the slot machines.
She is survived by her loving daughters, Patricia Varnado and husband Eric, Carol Galloway and husband Wayne, and Lori Joseph and husband Timothy; her devoted companion, Adolfo Mondragon; her cherished grandchildren, Thomas Guerrero, Andrew Guerrero, Leo LaSoya, Nicole Garcia, Jason Foor, Mitchell Foor, and Savannah Weed; 18 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Paulina and Ruperto Martinez; her husband, Thomas Silva; her son, Robert James “Peewee” Silva; her granddaughter, Lauren O’Daniel; her sisters, Mary Garza and Sylvia Willis; and her great-grandson, John Daniel Garcia.
Josie’s greatest joy was her family. She leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience and determination that will continue to live on through the generations she nurtured and inspired. Though her presence will be deeply missed, her family finds comfort in the countless memories she created and the impact she made on their lives.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to MD Anderson for Patient Assistance or the charity of your choice.
A celebration of her life will be held later in the month. Details will be provided.
