

MARY WEST THOMAS
(ALSO KNOWN AS AUNT SPOOKY)
Mary West Thomas was born March 7, 1943, to John Wesley Anderson and Myrtle Lee Anderson in Ackerman, Mississippi.
Both proceeded her in death. She was the 6th out 10 children 3 brothers, Albert, Dávid and John Wayne Anderson ,3 sisters Johnnie Mae Fields, Louise Calmese, Mary Frances Thompson all proceeded her in death.
Mary joined church at an early age in East St Louis, Ill at the Mt Zion Missionary Baptist Church under the Leadership of Rev WB Rouse and Rev John H Rouse Sr. Mary was sang in the Choir and was a member of the Nurse’s Guild. Mary attended St John’s Mercy School of nursing in 1964. She was one of the first black females to attend and graduate as a nurse.
After finishing school Mary met and married Ronald J Thomas Sr. And to this union one child was born Carla Lee Thomas. She later married DeWitt Brooks and to this union the late John Anthony Brooks Jr was born. She was again joined in marriage to the late Charles M. Thomas to where no children were born into that union. She loved traveling.
Mary was very well-educated woman. Her passion in life was being a Registered Nurse. During her life she worked as a public health nurse at the East Side Health District. She later went back into the Hospital where she worked in the Emergency Room. She became Head Nurse until she retired from the hospital.
She enjoyed her job until her health began to decline. She came out of retirement to work with her good friend, Cindy, at the Real estate office. She had a very busy life. She later joined Impact Church St. Louis in Cahokia, Ill under the leadership of Rev Ronald Young Jr. She faithfully streamed Sunday morning service.
She is survived by her daughter Carla Gunter, of Houston,Texas 5 grandchildren Jacquelyn Gunter of Houston, Texas, Eric (Ashley)Gunter Jr of St Jacobs, Illinois, Her trusted companions/guardians Layla, Dutchess and Chi Chi. John Anthony Brooks Jr, Dyresa Brooks and Damien Brooks all of Berlin, Germany, 3 sister, Elsie Thomas ,of East St Louis, Illinois, Mary Watts Williams of Hazelcrest,Illinois and Terry Faye Breckenridge of Fallbrook, California, a trusted caregiver Jerome Cooper of Houston, Texas and a host of nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews and many friends that have been blessed to have known her.
