Richard was a fun and loving guy. I worked with him at HPARD, Sports office for over 10yrs and kept up with him throughout his retired years by phone. Last time I talked to Richard he told me he was losing his memory. Sorry, I didnt know he was gone until today (05.09.2022) when I talked to an old co-worker of ours. May God keep you Allison, Stephanie and Jennifer forever in his care. Richard's memory will forever be in your hearts.

Richard, you we're my best friend. I will always cherish all the times we spent together. I will always remember you. I will always love you.

Oh Boy!!!

I always think of Richard when I exclaim an "Oh Boy!" And, that is often! I would hear Richard say this first thing in the morning,  dozen of times in between, and at the end of the day! Forging on, I will continue to remember him when I hear this special phrase.

I am grateful for having had the privilege of being a small part of Richard's life. I joined the HPARD Athletic Department in 1991 and the whole crew (Richard,  Johnny,  Booby, Gary, Louise and James - along with Al, Cole, and Cotton) made me feel like family. I think that is why I stayed friends for so long despite that we were decades apart  in age. I left HPARD, but every time I was in the East End, I would stop to visit and hear Richard tell stories. When he ran out of stories, he would tell me what he read in the newspaper. He would always read the obituaries. I asked him once why he liked reading the obituaries in the newspaper and he said, "because I am old! I may find my friends there!" - and he was only in his 50s at that time. I was still young and looking for a career change and talked to Richard about it. He told me that just to make sure I was happy with what I did. I remember him saying something like, "look at me, I love this job!" and he genuinely did. He was present at my wedding, he would call on my birthday, we would check on each other, I met the crew for lunch or dinner once in a while, and I am glad we always stayed in contact. I was driving in Pearland one day when I saw Cotton running near a park. I called Richard and told him I had just seen Cotton in Pearland. Richard was happy to tell me he had left Hilton Head and they all had moved to Pearland and were happy neighbors. And, I was happy too since I my friends were also my neighbors now.

Oh Boy! I will miss my friend.

Uncle Richard was such a wonderful storyteller! His tales of living on Beatty Street in Houston and in Puebla, Mexico were vivid and entertaining. I am so sad to think we will not hear his voice again or hear his laughter (he did love to laugh!). Perhaps what struck me most about Uncle Richard was his love of family. I remember when he came to Aunt Dorothy's house to tell us that Stephanie had been born. He was so happy! Whenever he talked about any of his girls, his face would light up and you could hear the tenderness in his voice. And he was the best son to Nona, bringing her to both of my graduations and doting on her always. We miss you and love you, Uncle Richard.

I’m honored and blessed to have known Richard. He was truly a blessing in my life and I will miss him. My condolences to the family. RIP my brother…

My memories of my uncle:

The day he married Aunt Cindy at SVDP while recovering from knee surgery in a cast.

Bragging to all my friends when I was in elementary school that my uncle was the head basketball coach.

When he installed the awesome basketball goal at our house on 3106 Aberdeen Way. That goal provided so much fun for my brothers, numerous friends, relatives and myself for over twenty years. Once the lights were installed we played until late in the evening many a weekend. So much fun!!

The day I meet Aunt Judy for the first time….she looked like Jacklyn Smith, one of the Charlie’s Angels. Again I bragged to my friends my uncle was h going marry a Charlie’s Angel.

The year we built the beach house he gave us his Jon-boat. The boat had been sitting on the trailer for years. The first time we launched it at the bay it started to sink because of all the holes is the bottom. Thankfully Uncle Richard had the motor running fantastically and we got the boat back to the launch before it sank….we laughed a long time about that.

I met Richard when I came to the city in 1980 he was a wonderful guy and friend I don’t think that man ever met a stranger. He enjoyed his sports telling stories about baseball. And working on his old truck that he restored .Rest In Peace. 🙏

Richard was my roommate with Bill Cole and Elton Cotton in 1967-68. We leased a 4 bedroom home in Bellaire and all lived together until Richard fell in love and moved out, got married, and started his family. Bill Cole and Richard both graduated high school from Stephen F. Austin and were good friends. Richard was a great basketball player and he often played for teams that Bill managed. Bill Cole worked at the City of Houston Athletic Department and Richard joined Bill at the athletic department and worked there for many years. We all eventually became elected into the Fastpitch Legends of Greater Houston. Bill was elected for his wins as a softball manager, Richard as a Softball commissioner, Elton and I were elected as players. We all remained life long friends until each person’s death.
Richard was a wonderful man and loved by all who knew him. May you rest in pease my friend.
