Ruth A. Whittaker Bledsoe was born on August 12, 1943, in Mart, Texas, to the late Ozell D. Sadler and Carl R. Whittaker. As the eldest of her siblings, she carried a natural sense of responsibility, strength, and leadership from an early age.
Ruth embarked on a beautiful journey as a young military wife, she lived across the country in places such as Laredo, Texas; Dover, Delaware; and even Alaska. One of her most fascinating chapters was the time she spent living in Detroit, Michigan—the home of Motown Records—where she had the unforgettable experience of meeting several Motown artists, including The Temptations.
Throughout her life, Ruth became a deeply devoted woman of faith. She dedicated more than four decades to Greater Mount Horeb Missionary Baptist Church, serving faithfully as choir director and choir member. Her beautiful voice, leadership, and love for worship left a lasting imprint on every song and every soul she touched.
Ruth also enjoyed a long and fulfilling career at her beloved Texas Southern University. For over 35 years, she served with pride and passion as the overseer of the former Robert J. Terry Library and later in the Barbara Jordan Special Collections and Archives. TSU was more than a workplace to Ruth—it was a community she treasured.
Known for her larger-than-life personality and heart of gold, Ruth lit up every room she entered. From the signature flowers in her hair to the matching scarves around her neck, she radiated confidence, style, and joy. Her spirit was warm, loving, and unforgettable.
Ruth was the world's greatest mother to her four loving children: Audrey, Kirby Jr., Christopher Sr. (Renee), and Shandalyn (Victor). She was a proud and devoted grandmother to Kirby III, Ashante, Christopher Jr., Ricci Jr., Trecci, Rashad, Ryan, Renisha, and Ryland; and great-grandmother to Christian, Noah, Marissa, and Makenzie. She was also "Granny" to a host of honorary grandchildren whom she adored with all her heart. Ruth was a cherished cousin, big sister, a loving aunt, and a loyal friend-touching every life around her with warmth, wisdom, and unwavering love.
While Ruth has gone home to be with the Lord, the beauty of her life remains firmly planted in the hearts of her family, friends, and all who loved her.
Her legacy of faith, service, joy, and love will endure for years to come.
