Sabino Garcia de Acilu, a compassionate, faithful, and loving soul, passed away peacefully at the age of 91 on July 19, 2025. Born on February 18, 1934, in Santa Cruz de Campezo, in the Basque region of Spain, Sabino leaves behind a legacy of profound dedication to his faith, his family, and his community.
In Sabino's early years, his dreams guided him to his passion with spiritual endeavors; he was ordained as a Catholic priest in 1956. For 30 years, he was a devoted member of the Order of Saint Augustine Friars, a time in his life that he cherished deeply. His rigid yet nurturing education led him to earn a Licentiate in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical University of Comillas Spain and later his Master’s degree in Counseling and Guidance. Sabino extended his gentleness and compassion as a Psychotherapist in America—a poignant testament to his caring nature.
On August 11, 1978, Sabino found companionship and joy in his marriage to Mary Helen Sosa, his loving wife of almost 47 years, with their relationship standing as a pillar beautifully adorned with shared moments and mutual admiration. Sabino was the youngest of 12 children, surviving with one cherished sister. His vibrant legacy includes numerous nieces and nephews—36 residing in Spain and 8 in America; predeceased by one; and many friends from Spain, his work, and his Country Place community.
With a soul elegantly tuned to every note of life, Sabino enjoyed playing the accordion and harmonica, serenading guests with melodies rich in love and memory. His laughter echoed especially around children; his invitations always welcoming conversations animated by melodies and soccer games. He held music dear to his heart, especially all Basque tunes which enchanted his spirit. Poetry, biking, and above all, the warmth of others' company adorned his life.
To honor his memory, a visitation will be held at Forest Park South Funeral Home, 12650 Shadow Creek Parkway, Pearland, Texas, on August 1, 2025, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., followed by Morning Prayers and a Celebration of Life from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the Celestial Tides Chapel, to be presided over by Deacon Jose Luis Martinez. A Reception will follow immediately after from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Oceanview Events Hall.
Given his heartfelt devotion to community welfare, kindly donate in lieu of flowers to the local organization: Christian Helping Hands, 4305 Magnolia Pkwy, Pearland, TX 77584.
Sabino's earthly departure tenderly reminds us to rejoice in moments of joy among friends and family while embodying his principle that kindness and sincerity reside at the heart of a fully lived life.
Psalm 39:6-11
“Surely everyone goes around like a mere phantom;
in vain they rush about, heaping up wealth
without knowing whose it will finally be.
“But now, Lord, what do I look for?
My hope is in you.
Save me from all my transgressions;
do not make me the scorn of fools.
I was silent; I would not open my mouth,
for you are the one who has done this.
Remove your scourge from me;
I am overcome by the blow of your hand.
When you rebuke and discipline anyone for their sin,
you consume their wealth like a moth—
surely everyone is but a breath."
