

Born February 19, 1946 in Tacoma, Washington to Leo F. and Jean A. (Hoffert) Matthews, she married Wayne R. Shafer, Jr. on June 5, 1966 in Pekin.
Surviving are one daughter, Robyn (Bob) Wernowsky of Pekin; two grandsons, Nick Wernowsky and Nate Wernowsky, both of Pekin; one sister, Terri Gambetti of Pekin; one brother, Ron (Melanie) Matthews of Pekin; two cousins, Barbara (Don) Cullen and Martin (Sheila) Matthews, both of Pekin; one niece, Baylee Gambetti of Pekin; three nephews, Clay (Erin) Gambetti of St. Petersburg, Florida, Mark Matthews and Michael (Jordan) Matthews, both of Pekin; two great-nephews, Alexander Matthews Gambetti and Carson Matthews and two great-nieces, Emily Matthews and Addison Matthews.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents.
An active member of the community, Carol belonged to the Pekin Women of the Moose Chapter 673, the William Schaefer American Legion Unit #44 Ladies Auxiliary, and Altrusa International, where she held several offices including President and Vice President. She also had been a member of the Christian Women’s Club and was a former Girl Scout Brownies leader.
Carol was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Pekin.
Her memorial service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 3, 2015 at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Pekin. The Rev. Judy Kennedy will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin, and also from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Tuesday at the Church. Inurnment will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.
