

Born December 18, 1948, in Springfield to John Edward and Justine Louvine (Atchison) Powell, he married Barbara Barton on January 24, 1969 in Glenarm. Together they enjoyed 56 years of marriage. She survives.
Also surviving are three children, Victoria Roach of Pekin, Chad (Angela) Powell of Williamsfield and Michael (Erin) Powell of Delavan; six grandchildren, Dayton, Gabrielle, Grace, Casey, Connor and Reagan; two siblings, Marsha Powell of Springfield and Ivan (Connie) Powell of Illiopolis; one sister-in-law, Jennifer (David) Rogers; one brother-in-law, Walter (Pam) Barton, II and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Dennis Powell.
Chester was a veteran of the United States Army. He served in the Vietnam War from 1969 to 1970.
He worked as a heavy equipment mechanic and operator for the Operating Engineers Local 965 in Springfield.
Chester enjoyed woodworking, gardening, tinkering in the garage, and being outdoors. He loved to share his knowledge and teach others what he could.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Versailles.
A celebration of Chester’s life will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 5, 2025 at Bramley's Reception Center, 150 Reichert Road, Divernon, IL 62530. Cremation has been accorded by Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin.
