Born May 6, 1929 in Pekin to Edward Adam and Genevieve A. (Hayes) Messmer, he married Marilyn Hope Denning on June 12, 1960 in Peoria. She died February 8, 2018 in Peoria. He was also preceded in death by his parents and infant brother, James.
Surviving are one daughter, Michelle Messmer of Pekin; one son, Brad (Marilyn) Messmer of Pekin and two grandchildren, Braden Messmer of Morton and Bronwyn Messmer of Corpus Christi, Texas.
Duane was a Korean War veteran of the United States Army. Duane received the Bronze Star Medal for his leadership and exemplary service during combat in his infantry unit.
He was a 54 year member of the Empire Lodge 126, Ancient Free & Accepted Masons in Pekin and received his 50 year pin in 2019.
Duane graduated Pekin Community High School in 1947. Duane received a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Accounting from Bradley University.
He had worked as an Internal Revenue Service agent for 26 years before retiring in 1982 and later worked for the State of Illinois as an auditor for four years.
An avid Chicago Cubs fan, Duane loved being outdoors working in his yard, taking care of his flowers or playing golf. He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Duane was a member of New Beginnings Fellowship in Christ Church in Pekin.
His graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, October 2, 2023 at Lakeside Cemetery in Pekin. Susie Meaker will officiate. Private visitation will be at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. Military rites will be provided by the United States Army and Tazewell Military Rites Team.
