
Born February 26, 1926 in Keokuk, Iowa to Clyde and Rose (McCaffrey) Alton, she married John A. “Jack” Sheldon on November 28, 1946 in Keokuk, Iowa. He died April 28, 1993 in Peoria. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Virgil Alton and Addison Alton; and three sisters, Louise Elting, Maxine Wellington, and Cecelia Lake.
Surviving are one daughter, Sister Sylvia Anne, O.S.F. of Milwaukee, Wisconsin four sons, Stephen (Diane) Sheldon of Ellsworth, Kansas, Scott (Sandra) Sheldon of McLean, and John (Debra) Sheldon and Patrick (Lori) Sheldon, both of Creve Coeur; eight grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
Eileen owned and operated Railsend Hobbies in Creve Coeur from 1975 to 2006.
Eileen was an active member of Sacre Coeur Catholic Church in Creve Coeur, where she held many offices in the Altar and Rosary Society and served on many committees over 50 years. She was a former board member of the Creve Coeur Community Center, former president of Wesley Historical Society, past president of the American Legion Auxiliary, and former president of the Creve Coeur Chamber of Commerce, where she received the Woman of the Year for 1976-77.
Her funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at Sacre Coeur Catholic Church in Creve Coeur. Father Michael Andrejek will be the celebrant. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Creve Coeur and also from 9:45 to 10:15 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Saint Mary’s Cemetery in West Peoria.
