

Born December 27, 1927 in Stacyville, IA to Ray and Clara (Heumann) Mayer, he married Esther Caroline Isaac on September 16, 1950 in Stacyville, IA. She died November 27, 2005 in Marquette Heights. He was also preceded in death by his parents; one infant daughter, Sandra Jean Mayer; two brothers, Romanus and Clarence Mayer.
Surviving are two daughters, Teresa Mayer of Milwaukee, WI and Mindy (Bill) Bechaz of Omaha, NE; three sons, Rick (Argelia) Mayer of Newburg, IN, Tim (Barbara) Mayer of Metamora and Tom (Donna) Mayer of Louisville, KY; eight grandchildren, Brett, Jill, Kyle J., Ryan, Melissa, Kyle A., Kelly Jo and Ian; three great-grandchildren, Temo, Lana and Anaya and two brothers, Darrell (Lorene) Mayer and Allan Mayer.
He had served in the United States Army Air Force during WWII from 1946 to 1947 and attained the rank of Corporal.
He worked as a mechanical engineer at Caterpillar, Inc., the American Distilling Co. for 25 years and retired from Midwest Grain in 1991.
He enjoyed woodworking, bowling, working puzzles and watching baseball of any type, especially the St. Louis Cardinals. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his grandkids.
Elmer gave more than he took, focusing on his family, church and community.
He was a member of the Sacre Coeur Catholic Church in Creve Coeur for 64 years, Sacre Coeur Men’s Club and Society of Plant Engineers. Elmer was a member of Knights of Columbus Archbishop Schlarman Council #3507 in Pekin, where he also was a fourth degree member of Assembly 210.
His funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 24, 2015 at Sacre Coeur Catholic Church in Creve Coeur. Monsignor Timothy Nolan will be the celebrant. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Creve Coeur, with recitation of the Rosary at 1:30 p.m. A Chalice ceremony will be conducted by the Knights of Columbus at 1:15 p.m. Additional visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. Monday at the church.Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery in Peoria, with military rites accorded by United States Air Forace and Tazewell Military Rites Team.
