

Born August 8, 1929 in Chapel Hill, Kentucky to Argie and Mable (Carter) Layne, he married Dorothy Hoerr in 1954. She died in 1978. He later married Becky Ward on March 3, 1992 in Dayton Beach, Florida. She survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Stacey (Jeff) Govednick of Delavan, Angela Hannig of Somonauk, and Dana (Jeff) Rogers of Pekin; two sons, James (Dinah) Layne of Pekin and David (Sarah) Byard of Bartonville; and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife; and one brother, Dean Layne.
He served in the United States Navy for 4 years.
Jim worked at Caterpillar, Inc. for 33 years, retiring in 1979 as an electrician. Jim also owned and operated Layne’s Auto Sales and was the former longtime owner of Layne’s Pekin Towing, which now is operated by his son.
He was a former member of the Pekin Police Department Auxiliary, Fraternal Order Police Lodge #105, and the Pekin Moose Family Center #916.
Jim loved to ride motorcycles, travel, and sight see. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and tending to his tomato and pepper garden.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 24, 2015 at Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin. Pastor Brad Martin will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Cremation will be accorded after the funeral.
